RUMOR CIRCULATING THAT JESSICA THE CAMPAIGN MANAGER IS GOING TO BE DEMOTED TO DEPUTY CAMPAIGN MANAGER
WEBB CONSULTANT STEVE JARDING TO TAKE OVER AS CAMPAIGN MANAGER.
QUESTIONS CIRCULATING ON HOW STEVE CAN DO THE CAMPAIGN WHILE TEACHING CLASSES FIVE DAYS A WEEK AT HARVARD THIS FALL.
DEVELOPING.....
My other issue is with "Born Fighting". By all accounts, Jim Webb was born healthy. Isn't this just a little insensative to children born with serious illness, like my nephew who was in an inncubator for 3 weeks, fighting to hang on? Also, why do we want someone born fighting? I want someone who will be an effective congressional leader, not someone who constantly feels the need to butt heads.
Posted by: this is sad | June 30, 2006 at 10:41 AM
Vivian, you want Webb to take over Miller's email list? Is that right? Have you asked if Miller is willing to hand over his list to Webb? let aside the fact that he asked for support for Webb.
I used to work for the DNC. Getting candidates to release their email list to opponents is very difficult sometimes. candidates hold these contact lists like they're the holy grail. Does John Kerry come to mind to you? The DNC has pleaded, begged him on numerous occasions to release his gigantic 2004 email list that ALL supporters helped him build, to the DNC for voter mobilization and fundraising. John Kerry has REFUSED every single time.
You don't know what has transpired in the Miller campaign. Do you know if Harris Miller has also refused to release his email list permanently to Webb??? Do you???? You are jumping the gun here not knowing what is going on.
Posted by: | June 30, 2006 at 10:48 AM
Harris Miller has a lot more charater than I would have if I were in his shoes. Hell would freeze over before I gave Webb my email list or any other lists after the way that he was treated in the primaries. Iam obviously not a democrat but I think the only reason Miller is supporting Webb is to hopefully gain Webb's supporters3 favor when he runs for gov or lt. gov in 3 years.

Oh yes, keep attacking the people who point out how obviously anti-Semitic that Webb cartoon is.
What a great way to alienate everyone away from the campaign.
Keep showing the world the stuff you're really made of because you are leaving the opposition with not much leg work.
Posted by: | June 30, 2006 at 11:22 AM
Don't give me that PC bullshit "I'm offended by born fighting." It's the title of his book and it's an expression for his culture. I don't think Webb is going to hit the Senate floor and challenge Senators to wrestling matches, although that would be entertaining.

Why not issue a simple apology for the cartoon?
And, why not take the highroad by admitting that it was wrong and fire the person responsible?
That would show true values.

Here is a little tidbit about Hollings:

In defense of the Webb Campaign Staff. According to folks I know on the campaign it's the candidate who doesn't have a clue. Anyone who has really worked on a campaign (ie. phone and door volunteers that doesn't mean you) knows that the worst campaign manager is the candidate and that's whats happening. He won't get on the phone and raise money, he doesn't like to go greet voters... When it comes down to it, Resumes don't raise money or talk to voters. hmmm... reminds me of a dem I supported in 04 - Clark

Allen is a throwback 1960's racist. There's so much ammo against Felix Allen. He virulently opposed MLK holiday.
Now is the time to blast out Felix "Racist dragging her sister up the stairs by her hair" Allen to all the new Virginians. I sent Felix's racist background to all the media outlets on a blast email. Can't wait for felix to start squealing like the racist pansy that he is.

Any person with any background in Virginia politics knows that George Allen actively campaigned in the black community in 1993 and received a larger percentage of the black vote than most Republicans in Virginia normally do.
So, any attempt to cast him as a racist falls flat. Folks know better.
But, Webb's cartoon depicting him as the big bad GI Joe doll with the kung-fu grip next to the caricature of Miller is something that will have a self-life longer than anything else from this campaign.

There are certain folks in Franklin and Henry County who have been members of the KKK -- in the past. So, the sentiment still lingers.
If there is any doubt that cariacature was anti-Semitic, from a purely common sense standpoint, Stanley demonstrated himself to be a complete idiot.

The problem is there is a politician in mainstream politics who has put out literature that mirrors that of hate groups.
There are no winners or losers in this, there is hate and bigotry being used against an ethnic group that is unexceptable.
When scratching the surface more we are finding Webb staff who have a history of being involved with the campaigns of anti-Semites.

Good for Webb is that he's only down by 7%. Bad for Webb is that he's down by 7% in a poll with a very favorable methodology, Allen has a 51% approval (in Webb's poll) and 56% of VAs say things are going in the right direction.

Sorry, can't do that.
Here's what matters. Poll was taken Benenson (Democratic polling group) for Webb.
Head to head Allen 46, Webb 39, don't know 15.
Allen has a 90% name ID, Webb has 42%
51% rate Allen as Excellent/Good Senator.
36% rate Bush as Excellent/Good President.
56% say VA is going in right direction (31% for country).
Race is tied when "positive profile of each" is read.
Truth is, an internal poll like this being at 7% pretty much in and of itself shows the Zogby poll to be a little goofy.

I am Jewish, I have seen the cartoon in question and I have seen Harris Miller. The cartoon was not anti-semitic. It actually was a fairly accurate depiction of how Mr. Miller looks. He has Jewish features, including a prominent nose.
I do too. I once paid one of those street corner caricaturists that you always find in artsy tourist locations to do a quick caricature of me. And guess what, I looked Jewish too in that picture.
What was being made fun of in the cartoon was Miller's lobbying career supporting outsourcing. Webb was portrayed as the Superhero who was going to protect the American worker from outsourcing by rich corporate executives.
Also, Perserverando (Joe Stanley) continually does parodies of politicians and bloggers on his blog.
There are many political cartoonists whose drawings are far broader parodies of their subjects than this one was. If their subjects happened to be Jewish, would that make them anti-semitic too?
Can a political cartoonist never parody a Jewish politician who has Jewish features?
And why are the people going into overdrive mostly non-Jews? Despite the claims of some of the anonymous posters, and of course, Lewis Armistead, no Jew that I've heard has objected so far when they've found out the whole story and actually seen what Harris Miller looks like.
Also, this may shock some of those who protest too much, but as a Jew I think Harris Miller and I look fine with our Jewish features. I hope that, like me, he doesn't want to look like a WASP.
I see nothing so special about straight blond hair, blue eys, snub noses, and thin lips. I challenge the culture that says that such features are the only acceptable form of beauty. Just as black is beautiful, so is Jewish, Hispanic, and every other ethnicity. Of course, that does include the typical Anglo-Saxon features too. I don't mean to cast aspersions on anybody's looks or ethnicity. I'm only saying no one group has the corner on beauty.
Oh and on last thing about the supposed anti-semtisim in that cartoon. Lewis, you obviously are an admirer of a Confederate officer. I am assuming that the moniker you use is not your real name. So, um, perhaps you are not the best aribter of what is or isn't anti-semitism compared to a real, actual Jew.
If you were, perhaps you would use the pen name Judah Benjamin rather than Lewis Armistead.

When I slam someone, it will be for effect.
To me, hacks and candidates are fair game -- not volunteers.

Allen's positives and high name ID (even in an obviously slanted poll) indicate that his numbers are unlikely to decay much. The question, therefore, becomes whether Webb can improve his numbers amongst undecideds enough to make it close. That is an unanswered question of now.

A few points here:
1. Webb has not yet begun to fight. Everyone in Virginia knows George Felix Allen, nobody knows Jim Webb. All I can do at this point is sit back and smile. To know Jim Webb is to love him. To know George Felix Allen is to lament lost potential.
2. I've never seen a thread so full of hatespeech. The anonymous commenters on this thread are a discredit to the VA political blogsphere.
3. Webb suppoters take heart. The Webb campaign is about to become an endless fountain of good news for the Democratic Party, Virginia and the Nation.
It's springtime in Virginia.

I hope no one thinks this race is actually going to be about small donations from 5-6 years ago from the likes of Enron and Abramoff. We'll have to come up with better than that.

Anonymous Is A Woman: don't waste your energy on the Allenites.
No suprise that the they hold George Felix Hanging Noose Throwback 1930's Fake Cowboy Allen, Jr in high esteem. 'nuff said.
