Virgil Goode (via DP):
"The Republican said he had “never heard somebody so uninformed as Mr. Weed was in his comments about [MZM and Martinsville]. He said I got nearly $100,000 in illegal contributions. Not so. It was about $46,000..."
I have never laughed so much at a newspaper quote.
I'm only corrupt 46% of the time!

Ben:
Is John Edwards a "crook" too?
Posted by: Spank That Donkey | August 11, 2006 at 01:17 AM
Kind of like when former Virginia Senator William Scott called a press conference to dispute his "election" as the stupidest person in Congress.

I didn't say Virgil was a crook. I said, it is hillarious that he defended the accusation that he took $100,000 in illegal contributions with "It was only 46,000!" LOL, I am still laughing.

Shouldn't he be interviewed on the Colbert Report?

I have always liked Virgil Goode, but this comment made me snort tea I was laughing so much.
This comment should give him the Weenie award fro this week, and I do so nominate him at this time.

I second the Weenie nomination. There is srupid and there is Virgil Goode stupid. I cannot imagine another "statesman" giving you anything stupider to earn the Weenie award.

He also spent 7 of his 15 minutes of opening remarks talking about MZM.
And without any sort of prompting, he compared himself to Tom Tancredo. And he defended Bush on Katrina for no reason.
Mistakes. Not just goofs (like when he called Harry Reid the Senate Majority Leader, or referred to governmental prodding of industry as "Subsididida- subsidida- subsiz- subsidi-dation.") these were the kind of mistakes you hire a staff to keep you from making.
P.S. He already hired the staff, and it didn't work.

In March, April and November 2003, MZM's PAC and company officials gave Goode's campaign a total of $19,000 in the days surrounding the award of three Pentagon contracts to MZM that Virg was working to obtain. I'm pretty sure what MZM was thinking. What was Virgil thinking?

An interesting story buried on page 4 of the Washington Post yesterday - CIFA Director Burtt and his top Deputy Hefferon resigned. Burtt's best buddy Lt.Gen.Jim King left CIFA a few years ago and went to work as VP at MZM - where he caught all those sweet sole-source contracts.
As Undersecretary of Defense Stephen A. Cambone said yesterday, "the investigation is still ongoing".
The people of Virginia's 5th CD are looking to the sad tale of Rep.Tom DeLay, and the shame and notoriety that his indictment has brought to his home district. Southside needs, and deserves better.

Less being put in a federal prison, Goode will win going away. Too bad for the folks in the 5th district, Al Weed would be a super Congressman, and Weed might even have some ethics..
but as they say, "people get the government they deserve"
This most definately applies as it relates to the 5th district and Virgil Goode...

Virgil may be a fool and a little dirty, but at least he's not a baby-killing pinko homo Democrat, right?
Gotta love life south of the Grit Line, those people really have their priorities straight. I feel bad for the people in Charlottesville who have brains but are stuck in that ass-backward district.

Damn it NLS. By criticizing Virgil you are encouraging those Al Queda types. Your post has probably been sent around the globe right now.
We're not allowed to criticize the party in power. Any sign of weakness could be misinterpreted.
Get in line NLS.

NBR-
I think you may mean the Kudzu line...the Grit line falls somewhere between the Chompawamsic Creek and the Mason-Dixon Line.
Posted by: Bwana | August 11, 2006 at 08:30 PM
Hey, anything south of the Fairfax County line is the Deep South to me.
Posted by: Not Bobby Ricky | August 11, 2006 at 10:48 PM
Just curious NBR, were they "ass-backward" when they voted for Kaine in 05 and Warner in 01? Or, are they only "ass-backward" when they don't vote as you as you, in your vainglorious wisdom, would have them do? (since you seem to know what's best for everyone.)

Sadly, I think Goode will come out on top, by a few less points than 04 but still on top. The Charlottesville metro area (Albemarle, Charlottesville, Fluvanna, Greene, Nelson) is to the 5th district what the Northern Virginia portion of the DC metro area is to Virginia.
Like NOVA's proportion in the state, the Charlottesville area makes up around 30% (upward trend) of the vote in the 5th. In 04 Bush carried the 5th with a little less then 56% but Kerry won the Charlottesville metro area with around 51% of the vote (same as the margin in Albemarle). In 05 Kaine pulled off a small victory in the 5th district but carried around 60% of the vote in the Charlottesville metro area (again similar to the margin in Albemarle). The reason 05 was different is because Kaine won big upstate around Charlottesville while the rest of the district moderated (slightly). In short if Weed is to win he will need to pull off big margins up here and not get completely blown away down state. I think it is very possible but I am just not optimistic that he will do so at this point. I say the final vote will be 55-45 Goode.
