Now Now.
The only way George Allen is going to leave is by an election defeat.
We have all known about this for years. We speculated in 1993 and we were pretty sure in 2000, just no one came forward.
I have to agree with Dannyboy, this election is not over and Allen probably will maintain a very slim lead. Why? Most of his loyal supporters just don't care about what they are now calling a "character assasination."
The real wait-and-see game is whether or not some of those loyals will stay at home and whether some will vote for Webb.
Don't dare discount the 72 hour GOP campaign. And don't dare forget the $8 Million dollars that Allen has to blow.

Ben,
No need to get your panties all wet yet.
When you look at this, compare these hit pieces to the military women who came to Richmond and opened themselves to media scrutiny.
In this instance, you have a Salon piece, the New York Times, and Larry Sabato. Sabato won't answer questions and only seems willing to repeast hearsay.
Bring these witnesses forward to public scrutiny. Hold a press conference. Let the press ask questions.
Don't stand behind hearsay.
Posted by: marco | September 25, 2006 at 09:23 PM
Sabato is a respected independent voice in politics. Why would he risk it all to lie about George Allen??
Posted by: UVA08 | September 25, 2006 at 09:27 PM
Wow
Larry Sabato has been celebate for twenty years, so he could save up the load he just blew up Allen's ass tonight.
Posted by: | September 25, 2006 at 09:28 PM
It's no wonder Ben has raised this. Allen's withdrawal is the only way that Webb can win.
Posted by: James Young | September 25, 2006 at 09:28 PM
The GOP 72 hour campaign? You gotta be kidding me.
A - You mean the 72 Hour Campaign promoted by George Allen media football player defender Doug Jones??? (http://www.rpv.org/contents/spotlight/doug_jones.shtml) I thought he was just a non-politically-connected football player defending Allen's character? I'm confused.
B - The GOP has no ground game in Fairfax County. NONE.
The $8,000,000, I worry about. I'm not clear what he's going to spend it on at this point. Maybe he ought to give it to a college and get another endorsement.

I'm with Anon 9:17 up there. In the immortal words of Winston Wolfe, "Let's not start sucking each others dicks just yet."
Webb's campaign has done a good job of staying out of the path of the trainwreck, but now Virginians need to see Jim as his own man and worthy of the office he seeks. It's not enough to prove Allen's an idiot, we have to show Webb as a Senator.

All of these driveby shootings perpetrated by the liberal media amount to the political equivalent of premature ejaculations.
If we take things to the next logical step, you'll claim that George Allen killed puppies while listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd.
At some point, people are going to start smelling the bullshit that the Webb campaign is trying to sell.
The only problem is that in their haste to assasinate the character of a public servant, they have failed to tell us how Jim Webb will vote on just about any issue.
Remember this...and you heard it here first...people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
Live by muckraking, lose because of muckraking.

Ignore the hard right on this one. They will defend Allen if he applied to become the next grand wizard of the KKK. This is about the Independent vote. Democrats and Independent make up over 60 percent of the electorate in Virginia so it they who we should be directing our energy towards, not these people making asinine excuses and attacks for Allen.

Why wouldn't Larry answer Matthews' question as to how he "knows" that Allen used the n-word? All he would say was that he was sure that he did, but he wouldn't back it up.

Wondering where the A-Trolls were.
Posted by: | September 25, 2006 at 09:44 PM
As Neil Patrick Harris might say on a TV show, this race is LEGENDARY!
"But now another former acquaintance of the senator's has come forward, saying that Allen once used the word "nigger" in his presence in the early '80s. Chris Taylor, a University of Alabama professor of anthropology, says the incident occurred in about 1981 or 1982, when Taylor (then a UVA graduate student) visited Allen (then a Virginia attorney just beginning his political career) at Allen's cabin in Earlysville, Virginia."
What he told TNR:
I met him twice actaully [sic]. I did two modelling [sic] jobs with his then wife and she told me about some puppies they were trying to give away. I told her I'd like to take one. So one evening I went out to their place in the country near [Charlottesville] somewhere. There was a pond quite close by. I asked if they had any waterfowl landing there. George told me about the ducks and geese that sometimes landed there and about the ducks who tried to raise their young but who would have them all devoured by the big turtles in the pond. Well, why doesn't someone kill the turtles and eat them? I asked. George said 'only the niggers around here eat em.'

If Larry Sabato wants to step up to the plate and face the full scrutiny of the public and all of the questions that will necessarily be asked, let him do so.
And, yes, I can read between the lines. He does not have first hand information. He is merely spouting hearsay.
The problem for Sabato is that he can't be "Mr. Crystall Ball" and part of the story at the same time.

NHL:
I can read between the lines. If Sabato had first hand information, he wouldn't have even talked about it.
Why? Because he would not want to place himself in the middle of a story as a material witness.
Instead, he has likely been fed information.
Either way, until and unless he is willing to step forward and face a full array of questions, he should stay out of the story.
My guess is that he will more fully explain himself. However, his reputation as a political pundit will be harmed.
His Democrat background is no secret. And, his dislike of George Allen is not either.
Posted by: marco | September 25, 2006 at 10:10 PM
Not for a minute should the Webb supporters get over confident. I believe Larry Sabato went on to say that Webb could not win without winning on the issues - not this latest scandal.

"You mark my words," Allen said. "Jesse Jackson can't win in Virginia. Hell, he's so far-out that even the niggers won't vote for him."
It gets worse...
"Just because we've got a black face in the governor's mansion doesn't mean the niggers are taking over." Doug Wilder, America's first African American Governor, had taken office in Richmond a year earlier.
Glad I'm NOT a fly on the wall to see Wilder's reaction to THAT.

As awful as George's past behavior is, it's also somewhat tragic that college is now fair game for campaigns.
Think of the impact on future generations: the only electable candidates will be the folks who spent their college years quietly avoiding being recorded on Webshots or YouTube.
Thus, while I celebrate the downward spiral of George Allen, I also mourn for the well-behaved, utterly bland leaders of tomorrow.

And now for something not-so-completely different...
This morning's EXAMINER breathlessly reports that Webb's campaign is girding their loins, so to speak, for the inevitable and expected attack on Webb's military career. The Swiftboat guys are on Allen's team--of course--and they are quite ready to GO THERE--if and when they find the goods.
Which got me to thinking about Webb's Navy Cross citation--you know, where he basically threw his body between the grenade and another marine? What will Allen's group do with that, I wonder? Trot out the man whose life he saved to say, "hey, Webb kept me from getting that medal!" or "Hey, I WANTED to die!"
I speculate; meanwhile, all Allen's people had was another mention of the cartoon. It's not possible that this is all they've got,is it?

I've stayed quiet for a long while, but this is the most amazing political race I've seen in years in the Commonwealth.
To put this in proper perspective, I want everyone to think back about 4 months ago right after the Dem primary.
No one seriously believed Webb would defeat Allen and even NLS was constantly talking about the inept campaign.
But more than that, during that time period George Allen was the golden boy of the VA GOP. I believe you will find may conservative blog posters using the term "rock star." And everyone who was anyone in the VA GOP was clinging to Allen for all they were worth.
Now less than four months later, we're not just looking at a Webb upset. These revelations are so toxic that anyone who wants to preserve their political futures in the GOP should be quickly distancing themselves from the same golden boy. It's not even debatable. He has literally insulted one fourth of VA voters (Asians and African-Americans). This is the biggest collapse since Trible choked against Marshall Coleman in 89 with even larger implications for the entire GOP.
Amazing.
