It has been reported that Dan Cragg was referred to the press by George Allen's campaign to claim Jim Webb had a racial incident in California. That story may now be falling totally apart. From 9 News:
"Dan Cragg, who later worked with Webb at the Pentagon during the Reagan Administration, says Webb’s account is missing both from the tape recording and transcript of his interview with the rising star among Vietnam veterans. Cragg says he doesn’t remember if he erased that part of the tape or failed to record that part of the interview."
"According to Cragg, when Webb did not publicly repudiate the allegations against Allen, he decided to "level the playing field."
Meanwhile, the headline on MSNBC is another person accusing Allen of using the n-word. From that:
"When George Allen stood right up and said he had never used that word, and that just blew me away,” Waring said. “I thought, ‘Boy, you could, if you had any integrity, you would say yes, I may have made some mistakes in my youth, in my younger years, but, and I'm sorry.’ But to hear him lie about it when I know he is lying."
Allen's problem developing now is not the use of racial slurs two decades ago, but his comments on Monday denying it. What was otherwise a good day for him is suddenly turning sour once again!
Here's my NLS advice to George Allen: "As long as you continue to lie about this story, the noose will continue to tighten."
Given Allen's history- that's something he will understand well.
What happened to your "Amazing 180" statement?
Posted by: aes | September 29, 2006 at 12:01 AM
The apparent collapse of the story that Webb had the same behavior.
Posted by: Not Larry Sabato | September 29, 2006 at 12:02 AM
Thank God you take your own advice seriously...honesty. There really was no "180". From what I hear, the Allen camp (internally) believes that this is a 2 point race. That is why they are in a state of panic. As Chris Mathews alluded to tonight, people are coming out of the woodwork and contacting him. I don't think it is going to get better for him. At least, I hope not!

Well, if nothing else, hopefully this non-episode teaches devoted Webbheads the dangers of blind allegiance.
For being a pretty secular crowd, I'm amazed at how easily liberals can fall into gushing groupthink. You can vote for a guy without worshipping him, kids. Let's just caaaaaaalm down here.
Posted by: | September 29, 2006 at 12:21 AM
Wadams is totally incompetent.
You'd think after circling the wagons on macaca, refusing to apologize, and giving the story 2-3 weeks of legs, Wadams, Allen, et al. would have learned their lesson.
Given how they dealt with the Chamber/jewish thing, I thought they learned by immediately laying it to rest, then Allen shows his insensitivity by making a stupid ham sandwich/pork chop crack.
Now, this pops up and it's back to deny, circle the wagons, counter attack with a bunch of Republican operatives (not just this guy but even the football player character witnesses were blatant partisans), and play the victim again. They haven't learned squat.
If Allen had said he'd used the word occasionally in the past, he'd learned from his mistakes, and moved on, he'd have been better served than by saying he'd "never" used it which is total nonsense and just egged on not just the people who've heard him say it, but every freakin junior reporter on the planet who wants to make their name by getting the next scoop with someone who heard it.
Wadams' ineptitude is digging his own candidates' grave.
Posted by: Not Harry F. Byrd, Sr. | September 29, 2006 at 12:22 AM
Dammit, I am an Allen supporter, and this is exactly what I thought would happen. Allen is going to lose this by continuing to dig the hole deeper. All this is doing is drawing attention to the Macaca incident and forcing people to look into Allen's past voting record, which is incredibly poor in reference to black Americans. Frankly, I am embarassed.
Allen camp, get it together, we have got to beat Jim Webb!

Woah, th RTD article is really againt Allen. That's surprising but it makes a good point. Good for WEbb, too.

Little slow on the uptake today Ben?
Dude, the 180 thing was hilarious, so much so I couldn't bring myself to comment.
Allen is still in deep trouble and there is just absolutely NO doubt about it.
You need to look more carefully where these accusations are coming from. The article in the Post THIS AM mentioned that the man reporting this behavior from Webb was PROMPTED and REFERRED by the Allen campaign.
NOT ONE of the Allen F-ups has had ANYTHING to do with the Allen actions, statements, and acquaintances who've come out with their stories---the Webb campaign has not sourced allegations.
On the other hand, from the women of the academy news conference, to the regurgitated accusations of anti-semitism, to the latest "Webb used the N-word too"---ALL ALLEN CAMPAIGN SOURCES!!!
Get a clue Ben and stick to the election analysis.
Webb is on the way to winning a Senate seat from Virginia. I know--it's still close, but it's clear where the momentum lies.
Posted by: Doug in Mount Vernon | September 29, 2006 at 12:42 AM
Just to clarify the last post it should have read:
"NOT ONE of the Allen F-ups has had ANYTHING to do with the Webb campaign other than the macaca video. The Allen actions...."
Sorry I must have accidentally highlighted and deleted that.

Posted by: Spank That Donkey | September 29, 2006 at 12:58 AM
Like I've been saying, Allen could end this whole thing if he just came clean. I don't know why he doesn't get it. Clinton never got it either. Why do politicians always think they can lie their way out of things?
If Allen basically came out and admitted that he was a real ass when he was younger, that part of being an ass was using the n-word, and that he now realizes that only asses use the n-word, this story would become meaningless. He could even use the event to talk about how he fights for HBCU funding, and maybe get a bunch of "ethnics" next to him for a photo-op, like Colbert!
VA Centrist has basically told us without telling us that another Allen tape is the big bombshell he's been referring to. Allen can make that tape worthless if he just comes out and says: "Yes, I was a racist jerk! I admit it! And I was wrong! I lied because I was ashamed of myself! And that's why I've worked so hard to help my ethnic pals here with (at this point everyone stops paying attention). Vote for me!"
The whole thing would be over. The only thing that could revive the charges then would be something from the last 10-15 years showing Allen being a racist, and it seems that all the evidence has been from pre-1984. Allen does that, the whole character issue is off the table, he outspends Webb with some issue ads, and red Virginia elects its red senator.
If Allen is too stubborn to apologize, he deserves to lose.

There is another Allen tape coming. It is in the last 10-15 years.
Just think: a woman in a stadium heard him use the word several times.
Just think: in how many other stadiums has Allen used the word? In how many of those stadiums was a camera present?

This election is coming down to women.
Are women more upset about the daily news involving the Iraq war, torture, severed deer heads, "Macaca", and the N word or by 3 political hacks skreeching about a horny joke Webb made 30 years ago.
People see thru these politically motivated attack ads today, just ask Jerry Kilgore.
Webb needs to stay positive and strong in his ads. Women will vote for strenght, honesty and courage. Judging from Sen Allens actions over the last 3 months he is in deep trouble.

Okay, I just watched the Hardball interview with the lady whose husband was the rugby coach at UVA.
Wow. She's very credible. isn't she? The kind of respectable, forthright and articulate witness lawyers love to put on the stand.
And if Allen were (God forbid) a Democrat? "I'd nail him even harder" she replies with fervor. Yeah, I can see that.

I think Allen's Horny Women ad could boomerang and hurt him.
Posted by: Horny Women Vote Too | September 29, 2006 at 07:51 AM
Heh- channel 10- first the stern women come on and talk about something obscure and confusing, then Webb's Iraq ad comes on. I hope Allen pushes the hell out of his confusing little piece while holding ethnic rallies and autographing deer heads.
Posted by: Doug | September 29, 2006 at 08:00 AM
Allen should pull that ad he is casting aspersions agaist horny women. I like horny women.
Posted by: | September 29, 2006 at 08:05 AM
Hmm...my view is...
Webb has baggage...yes I agree with my conservative couterparts, he does...
Allen has a HELLA lot more baggage...I mean, Webb doesn't have nearly the track record with all the weird insinuating racially charged things that Allen has. so there, I will have to agree with my liberal compatriots, that Allen is just looking awful as a candidate. And for everything you conservatives say, you just HAVE to admit, that no matter how much of this stuff is incorrect or even if some people are lying. Allen made a huge mistake in how he handled it.
Allen made a Kerry/Swift Boats moment. He decided to really ignore it, until it was banging down every door in the country, and then it was too late, and the message was implicit, George Allen is probably a racist. None of the messages about Webb have really stuck as CW around Virginia or the country.
Posted by: Matt | September 29, 2006 at 08:07 AM
I'm with you on that 8:05. And is this ad saying there is something basically wrong with sex? Look, I think harrassment is deplorable, especially by those in power over those under them, but really, horny women do have rights too.
Besides, mid 1980s I knew a couple horny women from the academy. They were wonderful and energetic and full of life. They were NOT the women in that commercial. Oh, and one of the nice ladies I knew ended up being a very important current day hero in a very special organization in this country. Hope she hasn't changed.

I just about flipped out a few minutes ago while watching News Channel 8 (NoVA cable news) and saw......a TOM DAVIS commercial!!! WHAT!!??? Davis is spending money on TV ads?
Only one possible conclusion: that race is closer than we think, and Tom is taking out an insurance policy.
GO ANDY.

Former Sergeant Major Dan Cragg has SPIT on his brother vet James Webb with this action. Cragg you have defiled the bond that you assumed as a so-called spokesman and writer for Vietnam veterans by LYING about James Webb to further your petty partisan agenda. Cragg you have shown yourself to be nothing more than a tool in the hands of evil. If you have a shred of honor you will step forward and apologize to all veterans for failing to meet the measure of their confidence and then you should beg your god for forgiveness. Go away Dan Cragg and never utter the name of James Webb, you are not worthy.
Posted by: Bubby | September 29, 2006 at 08:32 AM
I also see even MORE Allen ads, this time, one featuring John McCain.
Good ad, actually.
However, Allen is going to very soon be suffering from non-coherent message syndrome. Seems like Allen has ads out on like 4-5 different themes.
Big problem. Voters don't like mixed messages.
Meanwhile, Webb consistently hammers on the issue most important in the minds of 49% of voters: Iraq.
Posted by: Doug in Mount Vernon | September 29, 2006 at 08:32 AM
many of you ask "Why doesnt Allen just apologize and move on?"
Ill tell you why - admitting a mistake is like drinking poison to a career politician. It is the ABSOLUTE LAST THING you ever want to do. Lay blame, point fingers, make excuses, lie lie lie, but NEVER apologize. Thats page one in the GOP handbook.
Posted by: AlecBGreen | September 29, 2006 at 08:47 AM
John McCain is sadly morphing into a desperate political coward willing to do or say anything to get votes.
Allen is quickly becoming a desperate political coward willing to throw his lifelong love of the Confederate flag under the bus for votes.
Allen also hides behind women to sling attacks agaist a War Hero.
Webb just needs to keep hammering Allen on his failed leadership in Iraq.
Posted by: | September 29, 2006 at 08:49 AM
With over a month to go, you guys really think these n-word charges are going to amount to anything?
I don't care if/when/whether Allen said the n-word -- pretty much everybody did at some point in their life, if they're old enough.
And I don't care that Webb and his tough guy buddies paraded through black neighborhoods shouting slurs at blacks. BFD.
Besides, all of us on these blogs are creating a tempest in a teapot. Take a guess of how many voters have *ever* read a blog. Take a guess of how many even know what a blog is? You'd be surprised.
But how many watch TV & listen to the radio? Which candidate is going to have more ads there? No surprise there, that's for damn sure.
Posted by: I.Publius | September 29, 2006 at 08:57 AM
On VA politics. Re; Race. See Ollie North. Ask him do racial charges matter. He was a deer in a mailbox too.

Posted by: Doug | September 29, 2006 at 09:08 AM
I. Publius, ask Kilgore about the efficacy of carpet-bombing ads, why don't you? If you can find him, that is.
And Allen's race problem is not just fodder for the blogs. It is out there everywhere; newspaper, magazines, and television news (cable and local). It may be a tempest in a teapot, but it's just the kind of tempest the press love.
Whatever happens in November, this is something that will follow Allen around for the rest of his life.
Posted by: LAS | September 29, 2006 at 09:16 AM
Hardball did half, that's right HALF of its show last night about Allen. Chris Matthews is very conservative, but he hates being lied to, and he was lied to by Gillespie. His demographic is very conservative- we're not talking Olberman here -and he is going on and on about this.
Posted by: Doug | September 29, 2006 at 09:19 AM
So this election comes down to 3 skreeching hags in paided political attack ads vs daily news reports of Sen Allen's racist tendencies. Webb simply needs to keep hammering away with the Iraq Ad and it is checkmate.
Posted by: | September 29, 2006 at 09:20 AM
I Pub makes a good point -
Most white southern males of that generation used the n-word. It's a sad fact...
However...most apologize for their youthful stupidity, rather than lying about it and conducting a smear campaign against their accusers.
Posted by: Virginia Centrist | September 29, 2006 at 09:24 AM
It's the lying about indiscretions that is bringing out the folks that remember the truth. Allen thinks his electorate is stupid. His electorate think Allen is dishonest and desperate, unable to resolve his internal demons. Real simple. It is what everyone I know is talking about - the guy is in complete Denial.
Posted by: Not Anne Richards | September 29, 2006 at 09:38 AM
"white southern males"
Ahhh, more false northern pretentiousness.
I lived for many years on Long Island, and I heard the n-word as many times there as in my childhood in Georgia. Folks who claim that the south has a monopoly on racists are either blind or ignorant. Which one are you?
BTW, Webby's redneck handlers, (Carville wannabes, Jarding & Saunders) started the smear campaign. Y'all look like a bunch of sissyboy whiners when you complain about it coming back to bite you in the ass. If you can't take it, don't dish it out.

Posted by: I.Publius | September 29, 2006 at 10:05 AM
I. Publius, do you guys EVER take responsibility for your own actions? Nothing is your fault, is it?
Did Webb's staffers hold a gun to Allen's head and make him say offensive things to that young man? EVERYTHING that's happening to him now is attributable to that one moment. And NOBODY did it to him but the big man himself.
But it must be the other guy's fault. Like the catastrophe that is Bush's War, right? #1. Who could have foreseen Iraq imploding into Civil War? #2. It's the liberals fault! They didn't clap hard enough!
Posted by: LAS | September 29, 2006 at 10:07 AM
PUBES:
The ONLY thing the Webb campaign had to do with Allen's racist problem is release a tape showing Allen being racist.
If you believe Allen's comment that, he made up the nickname fine. But he called the only person of color in the audience Macaca, and then welcomed him to America. The kid is from Virginia he IS an American. That is the pattern of George Allen: degrade minorities in front of an all white crowd to show off.
NLS is right though the damning thing here is not that Allen said the n-word when he was a kid; it is that he is lying about it now. By Nov. 7, there will be a mountain of evidence that he used the word and if he does not admit it within the next week, nothing will help him. This is not only a race issue it is a trust issue.

No, VC, you're apparently suffering from silly feelings of guilt about your state and your region. Get over it. There are racist rednecks -- or the functional equivalent -- in every state. Lots of them, unfortunately. Racial tension, oppression, and racist attitudes have existed, and still exist in every corner of the country and every nook & cranny of the globe.
Don't forget what Professor Sabato told Chris Matthews -- Virginia is still the only state to elect a black governor.

Was the word used in both places? Yes.
But to pretend like the South doesn't have an EXCEPTIONAL racial history, is to deny our history. We have proud moments (like the invention of sweet tea), but we also have our downers (the lynching of blacks).

The Allen story is boiling over... meaning, the little tempest in a teapot has become quite strong, and is now all over the place. It is now CW that Allen said these things. Whether or not racist politicians will impact Virginians vote is yet another question.
After all, one might duly ask:
Is Virginia still for racists?
I know it is tough for many here to consider. But that, ultimately, is the question.
Will you vote for a Californian who utters racist hokum?

The Napolean complex: a short guy has to overcompensate with extra bellicosity.

I hate to disparage my state...but there is still plenty of racism in this state. I grew up with it in Chesterfield County (I call it country club racism)...I had friends who weren't allowed to date black guys, and the like...

"They have no choice but to endorse, they love the false drama but the deal is done."
Geesh. I've been on pins and needles all week about this issue, the Virginian Black Delegates Endorsing.
This was "supposed" to happen on Wednesday, but the decision was deferred. Now the msm reports that a "decision" would be made today.
How Webb has handled this has been a real disaster. From my perspective, DPVA and even Webb's staff have done there best to overcome this issue. Yet Webb has continued to disappoint us on this extremely important endorsement. His comments and even non-verbal communication during Black Caucus meetings have been awful.
Now I read that above quote and I can only presume that this decision is more of a non-endorsement endorsement. That's a shame and a very small score for Allen. I won’t hold my breath for an all-out ground campaign from these Delegates because they seem to have no real incentive to go all-out for Webb.

Virginia Centrist, while I agree that the South has much to be proud of, I earnestly and fervently reject the notion that the invention of Sweet Tea is one of them. Sweet Tea is a sacrilege! Iced Tea (aka nectar of the Gods) does NOT need sweetener--it is much more refreshing au naturel. Perhaps a little lemon, lime, orange or even mango--but sugar? Bah! Phooey! Sweet Tea is a bane to one's teeth and waistline, and God knows there are enough people with bad teetch and apple bellies already in this country.
In short, yes, we have things to be ashamed of here in the South, and the invention of Sweet Tea is definitely one of them.
LEAVE TEA ALONE!

An apology about and a promise that all that is in his past really don't work. Why? Because of the taped "macaca" incident. Anyone who saw it could see the malice still exists in this man. He can't apologize it away.

WHAT?!??!?!?!?!?!
Sweet tea is a southern thing.
You have what I like to call "the Sweat Tea Line". It's about 100 miles south of the mason dixon line, and below this line, restaurants will serve you sweet tea without asking.
Above that line, you have to take sugar packets, toss them into the tea, and then stir it. With the ice and what not, it makes it watery...and plus, it doesn't dissolve.
It's offensive, I tell you!
And one more thing:
LEMON HAS NO BUSINESS BEING 15 FEET FROM A GLASS OF SWEET TEA!!!
I recommend the Chic-Fila tea, very good. Or Lipton's Extra Sweet, No Lemon.

I remember reading about a medical finding a couple years ago.
A group of medical researchers did MRI tests on people who had strong political beliefs. People who were conservative; people who were liberal.
The volunteers were each put into a MRI machine and then shown pictures of politicans of the day.
When the Democrat was shown a picture of (lets say) Clinton, the emotional part of their brain would light up. When shown a picture of Bush (lets say) the logical part of their brain lit up.
When a Republican was put into the MRI the opposite happened. Emotional part of brain for Bush, logical part of brain for Clinton.
I remember this because I thought it was very telling. Both sides could learn from it. I do see some posters here and at other blogs who seem capable of looking at both sides clearly, but not many. I'm working on it.

Wasn't that line out of Steel Magnolias...
"Sweet tea is the gin of South."

Anon 12:06,
So basically, if we all looked at all politicians logically, everyone would hate every politician?

Struggled the with math part of the SAT, eh Nova?

Nova - that was me that posted it, I just forgot to type my name in.
You have a point. And logic, without any emotion, could be very boring.

From Khalil Gibran:
"For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to its own destruction."

VA Centrist, you poor, misguided, deluded thing. If you want a sweet drink, why not just have a soda?
Iced Tea Purists of the World unite!
One more thing: Iced Tea should NEVER come from a mix. It should ALWAYS be brewed. Can we not at least agree on that?
Posted by: LAS | September 29, 2006 at 01:06 PM
I'll agree on that --
but Sweet Tea is definitely a Southern Thing. Been down south enough to know that.
Arizona Iced Tea has only 1 kind of Sweet with no Lemon, and what's it called? Southern Sweet

The sweet tea line is somewhere just north of Fredericksburg and just east of Haymarket. Luckily I'm deep behind friendly lines. Of course tea should be brewed- what sort of savages do you think we are? But it should also be offered pre-sweatened, and the sugar added just after brewing before the cooling process begun. LAS- I am pro-choices and brew both sweet and un-sweet teas.

You can take all the tea in china
Put it in a big brown bag for me
Sail right around the seven oceans
Drop it straight into the deep blue sea

Anybody else surprised and dismayed about yesterday's Survey USA results? I am disgusted that Allen is still ahead. Why are 48% still in bed with this clown?

Mason Dixon poll is better -- tied at 43.
Go Bubby with the Tupelo Honey! Do you sweeten your tea with that?
I'm pro choice with my teas too : ) But preferred slightly sweet - not quite Southern.
