SAMPLE BALLOTS PULLED IN 10TH
FAIRFAX COUNTY DEMOCRATS PRINTED THEIR SAMPLE BALLOTS FOR THE 10th CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT ON YELLOW PAPER- WHICH IS ILLEGAL UNDER A 2005 RULE CHANGE.
ALL DEMOCRATIC SAMPLE BALLOTS IN THE FAIRFAX PORTION OF THE 10TH ARE BEING PULLED.
THIS COULD BE A DISASTER IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA'S MOST COMPETITIVE CONGRESSIONAL RACE...
DEVELOPING.....
Someone get to Kinko's quick! Urgh...

Our Father, who art in heaven...

No sample ballots, then. Dems have to work extra hard in the tenth to push their candidates outside of the polls. And Kevin's right, get somebody's stupid ass to Kinkos.

Another failure in our leadership. Oy....

Saw this on another blog.
"MSNBC just reported that the FBI is looking into voter intimidation issues from the Allen campaign."

This isn't a Kinko's job people!!! The 10th portion of Fairfax is over 60 polling places from McLean to Great Falls, to Herndon, Chantilly and Centreville.

I believe the reg says they cannot be white, which is supposedly the same color as the ballot. In the electronic voting age this really shouldn't matter.

Ben...it was sarcasm...I'm upset that we had 10 months to get this right and we didn't.

§ 24.2-622. Sample ballots
Nothing contained in this title shall be construed to prohibit: (i) the printing and circulation of sample paper ballots, which are not printed on white or yellow paper and do include thereon the words "sample ballot" in type no smaller than 24 point; (ii) the printing and circulation of sample voting equipment ballots, provided such sample ballots include on their face the words "sample ballot"; or (iii) the publication in newspapers or on the Internet of sample ballots of either type.
Sample ballots, in whole or in part, other than the official sample ballots, shall not be printed on white or yellow paper.
All sample ballots, excepting those official sample ballots authorized by electoral boards, are advertisements for purposes of Chapter 9.5 (§ 24.2-955 et seq.). Voters may take sample ballots into the voting booth or enclosure, but shall not give, tender, or exhibit such sample ballot to any person, other than an assistant designated under § 24.2-649, while inside the polling place or within the prohibited area designated by § 24.2-604.

Wow, the level of incompetence at the party leadership level is breathtaking. I'm hoping this has a minimal effect on Senate voting, but could impact the marriage amendment votes.

they don't have enough people go out and print these out at each pricint?
Posted by: akaison | November 07, 2006 at 09:59 AM
They're handing out yellow ones in Richmond, too. Pull them!
Posted by: | November 07, 2006 at 10:00 AM
I stand corrected on the regs.
Sample ballots really only help on the downticket races which this year are the referenda. Don't see this having any impact on the Senate vote.

No, it probably won't affect much in terms of candidates, especially if poll workers have the traditional glossy pieces. But it might have a big effect on ballot initiatives. In terms of uninitiated voters, at least we have the benefit of party ID on the ballots now. Still, whoever is in charge of the operation that generated these sample ballots should never have any position of authority within the party again.

This really only impacts the anti-family amendment. Sample ballots aren't going to swing any candidate votes.

They are green at Deer Park in Centreville
Posted by: | November 07, 2006 at 10:25 AM
Brimur, you're right for the most part, but the Hate Amendment would be an intolerable blight on Virginia.
Anon 10:25--good to hear the problem is not universal. Maybe it's by precinct or magisterial district?
Posted by: Not Ben | November 07, 2006 at 10:28 AM
vols are at most top precincts passing out the amendment flyers separate from the fairfax dems.
Posted by: | November 07, 2006 at 10:39 AM
This same problem was being addresses in the City of Richmond, the City Dems had printed theirs on yellow.
Posted by: William Jackson | November 07, 2006 at 10:42 AM
It won't have an effect on candidates. Those people who are voting for the Democrats will vote for the people with the (D) at the end without needing a "sample ballot." What people need these for are the amendments.

The Ballots in Richmond are not yellow. The party ones are blue. A councilman has "goldenrod" ballots, which are more gold than yellow, and the regitrar approved them.

The Republican Party of Hanover is handing out Sample Ballots on yellow paper. Voting official in Montpelier refused to order them to stop. Instead she confiscated them at the door (ordered people to put them in the trash can).

I just voted in 10th and received yellow hand-out

The Dem sample ballots in Oak Hill (Herndon) at 8am were green. The GOP ones were blue.
