Excellent. Now if they'd just legalize the reefer.

Ben - This is very disappointing, but I appreciate your strong advocacy on this issue. You can count on it coming back next year.

Seems to me that a democratically elected legislature never -- by its very nature -- "defies the will of the people". If people want change, they should vote that way. Until then, this is a perfectly democratic vote.

A true victory for the free market.
I urge you to exercise your right to NOT frequent smoker-friendly establishments.
The fact that it got this close is very alarming. I never knew that so many of our legislators hated giving citizens the freedom to choose.

Del. Englin pay attention to the other amendments. Leo Wardrup has important things to say. haha

Would like to know who voted what way.
Though this did fall the way I wanted it to, I recognize that I was in the minority of Virginians. I wonder if some people will actually have this turn on them in 2007.

Delegate Englin, I'm from Richmond and want to know what my Delegates did.
Do you know how Delegates MacClellen, Jones, Hall, and MacEachin voted?
Thanks.

Hooray for a quicker death!

Don't you guys think that most all restaurants, which already have well-established "smoking" vs. "non-smoking" sections, will continue that practice regardless of the override of this veto?
Posted by: | April 04, 2007 at 04:38 PM
Of course most easting establishments will stay the same. They like to cater to both types of customers. It means more money for them. This is just another attempt of the government trying to control private establishments.

anon 4:25 from Richmond
Jones and Hall voted against the Ban. The McClellen and McEachin voted with the Governor in favor of the Ban.

Caputo and Hull both voted no, as did the new Minority Leader.

Does this mean I get to keep bringing my cigars to Crystal City Restraunt?
Posted by: Chris | April 04, 2007 at 05:01 PM
Chris: Your cigars are OK, girl-nipples however remain illegal.

yeah, where are the liberals when you REALLY need them.

For those of you who say, "Just don't go to smoker-friendly bars": There is not a single non-smoking bar (not a restaurant, a bar) in Arlington. So stop talking about things that don't exist. You sound like our boy Dick talking about Iraqi WMDs :)

ByeBye George -
Thanks for the information.
And, thank you, Delegates McClellan and McEachin for voting with the Governor on this one!

Um, I thought we already established that there are no BARS in Virginia, since every establishment that sells alcohol must sell food as well. It's a percent ratio type of thing set up by the ABC. So, actually; bars don't exist.

To obtain a mixed beverage license, merchants must comply with ABC regulations. Becky Gettings, director of public affairs at Virginia ABC, said there are no official bars, just restaurants that serve beer, wine and mixed beverages. Every Virginia establishment with a liquor license must obey the "45 percent rule" – food and nonalcoholic beverages must account for at least 45 percent of total gross sales.
