I've spent the last week doing some in depth research on the traffic to NLS, Raising Kaine and Black Velvet Bruce Li, the three largest blogs in Virginia. This involved pulling 300-500 visitors per day from their public stats at random times to see where the traffic was coming from on these blogs. I'll have some VERY interesting in depth looks tomorrow at regions of the state, and even some localities, but here's the teaser for the night:
Average Traffic Per Day
Not Larry Sabato- 2,068 Readers Per Day
Raising Kaine- 2,049 Readers Per Day
BVBL- 1,143 Readers Per Day
I broke this into three categories- Virginia readers, Out of State readers in Border States (Virginia residents at work probably), and Out of State (non border states). Here's how it broke down:
Virginia Readers
Not Larry Sabato- 1,179 Readers Per Day (57.0% of traffic)
Raising Kaine- 963 Readers Per Day (47.0% of traffic)
BVBL- 687 Readers Per Day (60.1% of traffic)
Border State Readers: DC, MD, NC, WV (Likely Virginia Residents Working Out of State)
Not Larry Sabato- 413 Readers Per Day
Raising Kaine- 331 Readers Per Day
BVBL- 238 Readers Per Day
Out of State Readers (Not Border States)
Raising Kaine- 755 Readers Per Day
Not Larry Sabato- 476 Readers Per Day
BVBL- 218 Readers Per Day
Raising Kaine is clearly the blog people around the country are most likely to check to see what is going on in Virginia politics, while NLS has a lead in Virginia based traffic. Meanwhile BVBL continues to creep up in the statewide numbers and has clearly become the #1 conservative blog in Virginia.
More coming tomorrow on the Virginia traffic and where it is coming from.
....that's sort of creepy Ben. How long did that take you to do?

Come on, babe. Leave him alone.
I got yo back, fool.

Aimee, be quiet. If you are a bloggerman, like Ben, this is SOP. Stop trying to talk big.

Thanks -- very interesting. I took a look at what you call the #1 conservative blog in Virginia, and I found post after post about .... illegal aliens. I just don't get it, how people could be so obsessed with that topic. Isn't there a war going on somewhere or something?

Don't pick on my woman. Only I can do that. :)

Jaime--don't worry, I'm not trying to attack Ben. That was just my first reaction--and said more tongue in cheek than anything else.

Sarcasm detectors broken all around. Get those checked out.
Posted by: | August 21, 2007 at 09:31 PM
9:31--you ever think YOUR sarcasm detector is broken? =P because i am pretty sure nearly all of these comments can be read seriously and sarcastically. At the same time. It's pretty funny, actually.

Oh, ok. I didn't get the joke, but no problem.
And Danny, c'mon - you know me, that was HARDLY picking on'n. That was small potatoes. ;) No offense to you, Miss Aimee - just making sure Danny knows the deal.

No doubt the out-of-state Raising Kaine traffic is a combination of the MoveOn.org diaspora and family members of the last two administrations.

I'm not sure how you would categorize BVBL, Ben, but "conservative" isn't the word I'd use for it.
More "national inquirer meets granny's front porch".

What a stupid and childish comment. Shall I counter with the assumption that anyone who reads the ODBA or NAMBLA or the Freepers or LGFBs or RedState is one and the same? NO. So, get a grip, freak.

I was joking as well. Notice the smiley face after my comment.

Danny's lady? Did I miss something????

I meant that with all due respect, buddy. :)

What's interesting is that if you were to follow the ratings on BlogNetNews you'd get an entirely different impression about who has the most read blogs in Virginia.
The SWACers and a bunch of pretty obscure conservative ODBA blogs (not that their quality is necessarily bad, but they just really don't have that many readers if you actually go over to them and gauge their comments) always seem to poll high as "most read" "highest rated" most clicked on."
We've had these discussions before. By now, everybody knows that there are a few dedicated righty bloggers who go over there and click on eachothers' blogs and give each other high ratings.
I think David Mastio really needs to re-examine his so-called algorithm. Common sense says it's not accurate.
Whatever else, I trust Ben's numbers more than his.

The Raising Kaine out of state traffic is probably closly related to the link on DailyKos front Page. Can't get much more national exposure than that.
In addition there are alot of recommends diarist on dailykos cross posted to raising kaine: teacherken, beachmom, etc, etc.

Is Ben using different border state definition than the rest of us? Since when did KY and TN stop bordering VA?
Posted by: | August 21, 2007 at 11:44 PM
I didn't use them b/c our borders are really limited with them- and they are both "east/west" states, meaning very little of their states populations/work centers are near our state.

"More "national inquirer meets granny's front porch".
Jealous Charles? I am sure if Ben ran the same stats from your pathetic blog, it would looks something like this:
Two Conservatives
Number of readers per day: 2
Number of readers who are not James Young: 1
Number of readers who are not Charles checking his blog from a different computer: 0
Posted by: Batson D. Belfrey | August 22, 2007 at 06:28 AM
Actually, very few of Raising Kaine's visits come from the Daily Kos link. Basically none come from MoveOn. It's just people looking to see what's happening in Virginia.

my, my, how bitter and angry the "progressives" get when their sacred altars are threatened.
liberal blogs will always get more hits than others. Conservatives are more likely to have jobs.
