BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Democratic Sen. Barack Obama assured Western voters Saturday he believes in Jesus as well as the rights of gun owners.

Obama urged those at the rally not to believe everything they hear about him.

"We've heard the usual sort of smear campaigns. I don't know if they've trickled up to Iowa," Obama said to laughter from the crowed, then quickly corrected himself. "Idaho. I know they were in Iowa." [LOL]

"And then there are people who say, `Well, he doesn't believe in the Second Amendment,' even though I come from a state — we've got a lot of hunters in downstate Illinois. And I have no intention of taking away folks' guns."

Obama didn't mention that he does support gun control and has a record of voting for it in the Illinois Senate. He backed limiting handgun purchases to one a month, but he made no attempts to ban them. Today, he stands by his support for controls while trying to reassure hunters that he has no interest in interfering with their access to firearms.

A spokesman for Obama rival Hillary Rodham Clinton pointed out that 12 years ago when he was running for the state Legislature, Obama said in a questionnaire that he "supported banning the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns."

"Which one of Senator Obama's positions do you think the Republican nominee will tout in the fall?" said Clinton spokesman Phil Singer.

The Republican National Committee wasn't waiting until then. Party spokesman Alex Conant quickly put out a statement calling Obama's statement "misleading" in light of his 1996 statement."

It may be a victory speech, though the numbers are still a rockin and a rollin. Gallup had her at +4 nationally today, and I read somewhere (I think TPM Central) that Gallup said she was running slightly better in the Super Tuesday states. Rasmussen had her at +6 in its tracking nationally.

Pew gives her a +8, but this is the MOST interesting thing I've seen in a while: she has higher favorability ratings among Dems than Obama, 80 to 76%.

Clinton unveiled her 100 member supporter committee in VA today, but a funny thing happened:

My wife is on the list of Clinton supporters that make up her "committee"

1. They spelled her first name wrong (it is Megan, not Meghan)

2. They got her last name wrong. It is Crain, not Thornton.

3. They never asked her to "be on this committee"

4. She doesn't even remember signing anything saying she was a Clinton supporter (though unfortunately she is)

5. The fact that my wife, who hasn't done anything in VA politics in 3 years (except volunteer for Chap!) is on their list b/c they couldn't find enough other supporters is hilarious.

I guess you're just less important than such luminaries as Saif Khan, a former member of the VCU student senate and J. Alden Leonard, a W&M Student Government representative. I can see why they consider you less important than good democrats such as George Burke and Johnny Joannou, but really. You don't make the list and people who's only qualification is on Student Governments do? Pathetic.

[N]ew estimates say that a plan resembling Mrs. Clinton’s would cover almost twice as many of those now uninsured as a plan resembling Mr. Obama’s — at only slightly higher cost....

Both plans require that private insurers offer policies to everyone, regardless of medical history. Both also allow people to buy into government-offered insurance instead.

And both plans seek to make insurance affordable to lower-income Americans. The Clinton plan is, however, more explicit about affordability, promising to limit insurance costs as a percentage of family income. And it also seems to include more funds for subsidies.

Is it me, or do I have this strange funny feeling that Hillary will get around 1000 delegates on Tuesday? Leaving Obama with around 500.
