Bizarre Rumor in Richmond
Multiple sources are telling me that Delegate Tom Gear is under investigation by the State Police. As the rumor goes, Gear reported his car stolen to the police, and it was later discovered in the possession of his bookie. Apparently the car had been used to pay off gambling debts. It's a felony to file a false police report.
However, no member of the General Assembly can be arrested during session, so if this rumor is true, Gear is in the clear until at least this weekend. Again, this is for now just a rumor, but one that multiple people in Richmond are hearing.
A special election in House District 91 would favor the new Republican nominee.
Developing...
UPDATE: Morgan "The Ostrich" Griffith was storming around the General Assembly Building looking for Tom Gear about 9 a.m.

Assuming all this is true, what is the problem? I mean at least he's trying to cover his debts ...

I buy this, if for no other reason than Gear may be the single dumbest member of the House. I mean his basic literacy is seriously in doubt.

If someone came and took possession of Del. Gear's car, without his prior knowledge, because the car was legitimate collateral for a loan, then it is plausible that the report to police, although incorrect, was not made with any intention by Mr. Gear to make a false report.
You should wait to get your facts straight before smearing Delegate Gear's good name. Just because someone serves in elected office does not make them fair game for slander, nor should their personal lives be made fodder for cheap gossip.
I worked as a volunteer on Tom Gear's first campaign for the House, back when I lived in Hampton. He was also in the same American Legion (Post 48) where I was a member. We don't always agree on issues, but I have always found him to be a man of integrity and a gentleman, who I will continue to trust.

Gear was always late paying his taxes, has tied up the appointment of a judge because of his sister, and the fact that he has a "bookie" is disturbing, as he votes on legislation that regulates industries that are known for their unethical behaviour. Stop making excuses for this guy. BUSTED!!!

He is SHADY!!!! I would not be surprised, there have been rumors about him for years..
Not to mention he has trouble keeping his pants zipped.....

Tom Gear has a good name? News to me. A man of integrity? That's a word that Gear would have to look up in the dictionary.

Probably bet the money line for the Patriots...

As I grew up in the 91st, I had to hear about Del. Gear's shenanigans...nothing surprises me about him anymore. A good number of people down there tolerate that stuff...now that is surprising.

Dammit! I told Tom he was going to get in trouble if he kept betting on NCAA Women's badminton games. That's like the crack or crystal meth of sports betting. It sucks you in. The next thing you know, all you think about is shuttlecock. Everything shuttlecock. You need your fix--you have to have it.
Inevitably it ends the same sad way for all badminton gambling junkies. Your bookie has your car and you're dropping a dime to the 5-0 saying it was jacked, since you needed a lift downtown anyway.

With a story like that, you would've thought that represented Newport News instead of Hampton...

Stop sliming the guy. There is no evidence - ZERO! If and when that changes, you can say what you wish.
FWIW, no one needs a seedy bookie anymore. There are now plenty of semi-reputable offshore bookies that do multi-million international accounts via phone and internet transactions.

Boy, Ben, if this guy were a Republican, it would be declared a party scandal, with at least three wig-flipping visages of your namesake.

Multiple sources are telling me that Not Larry Sabato is under investigation for being a communist. As the rumor goes, he takes direct orders from the Kremlin and is seeking a violent overthrow of the American government. Apparently, his blog was initiated as a mind-control technique.
Again, this is just a rumor. But who cares about ethics, right?

Um, he is a Republican.

James, Tom Gear is a Republican.

Everyone knows from Hampton to Richmond that Gear does not pays his bills. I understand gambling cost him his business and he regularly does not pay his taxes. When he declared bankruptcy a few years ago he left creditors holding the bag for $2,000,000. He is a class act.

Was Morgan looking to break Tom's leg for not paying up?
Posted by: | March 04, 2008 at 11:21 AM
OK, I stand corrected. And I apologize.

Oh, "Sour," you're so impressive.
It'd be even more impressive if you crawled out from under the rock of anonymity. The World won....
Awww, never mind. Actually, nobody at all much wonders.

How can it be that no member of the GA can be arrested? What about say murder or bribery.
Posted by: | March 04, 2008 at 11:46 AM
They can not be arrested during session for anything that I know of.

Gear is the most reckless deadbeat in the General Assenbly...this is just one of his many illegal actions. Track the money he funnels through his hit man "Manny"
