Jack had been running against Gerry, literally planning his campaign from his hospital bed when he thought he would recover. For Gerry to claim Jack was in it for the "love of the fight" instead of "substance of the moment" (i.e. opposition to Gerry) in Jack's obituary article was one of the most pathetic things I have ever seen from Gerry.
And that is saying a lot.
