The RTD says the Creigh Deeds campaign is the worst since.... the Ben "Cooter" Jones campaign.
For those of you that don't remember (when I was 22) I ran Cooter's Campaign!
So basically Joe Abbey is the worst campaign manager... since me?
I'm laughing because there is a little truth to this.
What part of it isn't true? That Cooter's campaign was poorly run? Or, that Deeds is running the worst campaign since Cooter.
Explain.

I didn't say it was untrue. Cooter's campaign was horrible, and this probably has been the worst one since then. I could quibble a little (Schrock 04? Deeds 05? Allen 06?) but it's a fair shot.

Deeds is a good guy. I think he's a culturally conservative Democrat at heart. Those are the types of Democrats that are respected by those of us on the right.
He has been given bad advice by Nova liberals, who are not swing voters and are already going to vote for him.
Deeds should be distancing himself from Obama (cannot wait to see the PPP numbers showing him less popular than George Allen among likely registered voters in the 2009 election). He still has time to do it and perhaps peel off enough conservative voters by demonstrating that he's someone who is not owned by the Nova liberals and race-baiters (which I don't think he is at heart).

Don't be so tough on yourself. Some things on the Jones campaign were done well like The "Cooter for Congress" bumper stickers. Folks in the Fan of Richmond loved those stickers...the only problem was, everybody thought it was promoting a stripper or something.

Don't blame yourself, Ben. It's not your fault ol' Cooter couldn't stay off the sauce long enough to string three words together.

Ben,
This article tell where thing are going for you Ds. The fundamentals of Deed’s campaign are so bad that there is very little he can do to salvage his campaign even if O-blah-blah dumps money in the race.
Name one issue—just one—of Deeds that is truly original (besides supporting infanticide) where Deeds has not had to respond to McDonnell by saying “me too”. That’s why Deeds and his campaign are digging in dust-covered university file cabinets to come up with something, anything!, to change the dynamics of the race.
But your SCEARMING headlines about this will do nothing to fix a dysfunctional campaign that has no core theme beyond “me, not him”.

"...the only problem was, everybody thought it was promoting a stripper or something."
Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Good one Bwana!!

What a ridiculous editorial. Deeds wants to spend a few million on pet initiatives and the T-D equates that with McDonnell's plans to raid the general fund for billions to pay for transportation. Someone over there needs a math lesson.

Deeds should have run for AG this cycle, rather than Governor.

20 years from now, I think VA politicians will look back on Deeds 05 & Deeds 09 as the most head scratching period for Democrats.
If he lost in 05, why 09 too? And so on...

An unsigned editorial...I'm wondering what legislature the RTD has been covering during the last four years?
There will be no progress in Virginia without an effort toward legislative consensus and the courage to put all options on the table. And that is what Deeds has been saying and doing his whole career.

We should not waste our time trying to figure out which campaign is the worst in history. We should focus on the rationale that the RTD had for writing the article. Simply stated, Creigh Deeds has a campaign that is devoid of ideas, that is short on specifics, that is focused more on his opponent than on himself and and that carefully has avoided the major issues facing Virginia. Whether history will judge this campaign to be bad or the worst is not important. What is important and fortunate for Virginia is that Bob McDonnell has run a strong campaign and will be elected Governor. To paraphrase, "Mr. Deeds Will Not Go to Richmond".

Ben, you were 22. I'm sure you consider it an excellent learning opportunity! You'd be damned tough to beat these days.

Bob McDonnell has run a strong campaign trying to look like something that he isn't - moderate.
Bob better come up with something quick, or this is the new campaign reality.

Just curious, how old is Joe Abbey?
Posted by: Just wondering | August 31, 2009 at 02:44 PM
If this thesis is so damning, what does it say about the quality of the Deeds '05 campaign that no one found it and pounded it like they're doing now? Better campaign hacks, same lame candidate.

Where is Brian Moran and Terry Mc? There seems to be a lack of unity in the D side this time. The Rs are united after 5 long years.

Fightin'Joe Hooker had plenty of Generals standing around him...for all the good it did him when things got real.

Stonewall, where are Mark Early and Jerry Kilgore this election cycle? Oh yeah, the lost, so they're not in it. Guess what - McAuliffe and Moran lost, so they're not in it much either.
I mean, I don't see Brownlee out canvassing for Crazy Cooch, do you?

Not John:
Dave Foster has been fundraising and speaking for "Crazy Cooch".
It's ok, leave out the part that disproves what you have to say.

I agree Joe Abbey is the worst. Ive tried to volunteer for his campaign since the primary no reasponse. Deeds spent his time in Richmond attempting to find solutions to state problems. McDonnell tried to push his social agendaon us. Who would you rather have as Govenor.
