I couldn't disagree more with the premise of this attack on Bob McDonnell. BUT, this is an outstanding political ad. What an impression it makes! Nice work.

No, not at all.
Posted by: Va Blogger | August 28, 2009 at 01:31 PM
Obviously the diffence is the legislation that he co-sponsored but was not the chief sponsor. BOth sides are telling the half truth, so I dont really like the ad. (although it may or may not be effective)
Full disclosure-I am a Deeds supporter, and I'm more interested in economic and quality of life issues, than social issues

Yes, but not based on this web ad.
I've just had the sense the past couple weeks that new energy on our side is in the air. It's developing slowly, not like a shot from a canon, and it may very well be too little, too late. But I'm increasingly confident this will be a mid-single-digit race by mid-October.
The problem is McDonnell still is running a perfect campaign, not getting distracted, not being thrown off balance, and for that he probably ends up winning. I think Deeds closes the gap but then likely can't get over the hump.
The one thing Deeds needs as a game-changer, that I don't know if or how he can make it happen, is for a bigger-than-normal-for-a-Governor's-race chunk of base Democrats who showed up for Obama to also show up this November for Deeds and downballot Democrats.
If nothing else, I'm hoping and thinking Deeds realistically makes it close enough so that Margi Vanderhye and other Dems in tight HD races get over the hump, and in that case we still probably should pick up a couple seats in the lower chamber.

Excellent ad, despite what the stooge VA Blogger says.

Delegates are quick to tout bills they co-sponsored when it comes to a part of their record they want to highlight, so they ought to bear the responsibility of their actions when it's something, perhaps, they want to downplay.

If McDonnell is elected Virginians will spend the next 4 years examining women's reproductive systems while we borrow money from Wall Street bond traders to pay the bills. It will be like the Gilmore years with a better haircut.

In that the Deeds campaign needs to remind the base that he's their candidate, things like this are good.
SE VA MWC: I too am more interested in other issues, but as has been discussed on this site and highlighted in some polling, Creigh still needs to fire up the base some more.
I am sure the Deeds campaign is aware that Independents and undecideds will be looking to hear from him on issues like the economy, transportation, and education.

On one hand, Deeds' campaign needs a serious jolt of electricity. On the other hand, I think there is new energy in the air. I think the reason is that the GOP, as they always do, has vastly over-played their hand. And for some reason, it's taking Americans less and less time to recognize it.
Examples:
Palin claims Letterman attacked her kid. An almost legit complaint until she overplays it and accuses Letterman of being a pedophile.
Town Hall protesters unleash some anti-Obama energy with some success and until they over-play the death panel lie.
Opponents to insurance reform get some traction until they over-play the "keep government out of my health care" as they realize that Medicare is a public option with 43 million enrolled.
Possible coming attraction: Economic recovery will be downplayed or even portrayed as happening too quickly.
Posted by: Pete in Williamsburg | August 28, 2009 at 02:37 PM
Pete in Williamsburg, the recovery can't happen quickly enough for us in Virginia this November. It's simple reality that the stimulus stopped a depression and already is hastening a recovery, but it hasn't sunk in with voters yet. The faster things turn around, the quicker voters will realize it.

If Deeds is going to win, it's not going to be because he's pro-choice or McDonnell is pro-life.
Posted by: Va Blogger | August 28, 2009 at 03:28 PM
Comeback? You bet!
Next on the punchlist:
A commerical showing "Virginia today...", pictures of rolling foothills and the Blue Ridge Mountains, families hiking and fishermen fishing; panning out to "Virginia tomorrow [with a little help of Bob McDonnell]...", showing footage of the after-effects of mountaintop removal [destroyed mountains, scenery, and soot-filled streams once filled with fish].

So Deeds is really going to run this thing on the abortion issue? This is a crazy 1989ish type strategy. I'm glad....but it's crazy given the complete fear and outrage over economic issues.
I say GO FOR IT DEEDS!!
Posted by: Gnarly | August 28, 2009 at 04:13 PM
I'd expect that you'd "feel" one whether it was happening or not. Of course, the race will tighten between now and Election Day; anybody who believes otherwise is a fool.
Posted by: James Young | August 28, 2009 at 04:41 PM
I agree that there's been a subtle change in the past few weeks. Immediately following the primary, I didn't feel the presence of the Deeds campaign at all, even here in the City of Richmond. No signs, no stickers, no rallies and a plague of Bob McDonnell signs and stickers and TV spots and Internet banner ads everywhere I went. That's changed. Some of the change I think is attributable to the feeling of panic that set into the hardcore Dems after the last few polls, when it was clear that no one on our side was paying attention.
But the GOP is still running a good game, and they're damn well convinced that they're going to win, which is all it takes sometimes to carry you across the finish line. Also, I continue to be concerned, like everyone here, about translating the Obama support into Deeds support, because I've met a lot (and I mean A LOT) of Obama supporters who are still clueless about the race this November. These are all young voters and recent transplants to the state, and they're still slipping through the cracks. Again, it worries me, because if we try to win this race with just the traditional base, we're going to lose.

I love it. Please keep it up. The irony is that out here in the 6th/9th Districts where the hard core conservatives live, we actually have people pissed at McDonnnell for not pushing the abortion issue enough. By Deeds pushing it, he is firing those people up without forcing McDonnell to push the issue.
In addition, many of those "35 bills" are very mainstream positions. Several of those very mainstream positions, like partial birth abortion ban, are not where Deeds wants this debate.
The point of all of that is yes it'll fire up some hard core single issue Ds but it will also fire up some hard core single issue Rs. Of course the gap will close and this won't be anywhere close to a 15 point win for McDonnell but that's inevitable and has nothing to do with this line of attack.

The Deeds campaign may have to live with this definition of theirs of "sponsoring" legislation. If you are going to use both being a patron of a bill and the many times a legislator signs on as one of the CO-PATRONS, then it's highly likely all this will come back to bite them. I'm guessing the problem will arise when it is applied to other issues in the campaign....say for instance, tax and fee increases.

Yeah, a comback from -14 to -10.
The GOP will sweep you turds in November, you should just open wide and accept the golden shower you're about to get.
Posted by: Haywood Jablomi | August 28, 2009 at 05:36 PM
Well Salem, the last time you found yourself in such a "mainstream" Republican situation the candidate was future Governor Jim Gilmore. Do you really want to do this to the Party again? Centrist Republicans know they don't have a candidate this year.

As usual, Deeds can't come up with an idea or a strategy that hasn't been tried before.
If you can't copycat Bob McDonnell's strategies, might as well copycat Lee Atwater and Karl Rove's.
Honestly, whoever is coming up with the strategy and message development for Deeds campaign has a stellar career ahead of him in Hollywood - with their penchant for remakes that are hollow versions of the original, he/she will make millions.

Wow. I must say that I am stunned, amazed, and thrilled, that Deeds campaign is this clueless.
Please, please, please, continue to make abortion the focus of this race. McDonnell will win in a landslide.

Let's see:
- This is the same attack as 3-4 weeks ago and there is that much less time for Deeds to close the gap. In fact, the gap numerically has widened a bit and he is relaunching an already failed line. Keep up the good work team Deeds!
- Look at some of the co-sponsors with Bob McDonnell: Colgan's name appears 15 times as a co-sponsor in the bills used in that ad! That's almost an endorsement right there. In fact, Colgan's name is shown more with McDonnell than Cuccinelli. Now that may be because Senator Cuccinelli hasn't been around as long but you get the point. Even Harry Parrish and Don McEachin make appearances as well. Way to lump Bob McDonnell in with all those fire-breathers!

Excellent ad! Especially the music! Makes me all warm inside about Bob and encourages me to go out and work harder for the man!

That was an awesome political ad. Rtwng Extrmst and VA Blogger are part of the Taliaban wing of the Virginia GOP (Gay Sex) so of course they aren't going to like the ad or admit that it is and will be effective.

DCC,
“ the stimulus stopped a depression”? .. LMAO You really have taken the “blue pill” careful not to overdose. Obviously you were not around during the Carter years; maybe you should check out the unemployment numbers and the inflation rates during his wonderful liberal leadership. (maybe you can blame that on Bush?)
Good ad, I suppose if McDonnell gets elected all you radical liberals will agree that he has the same basis for a mandate as you believe Obambi had with his election.
I guess that means that liberals will be supporting all the “change” that is implemented because the voters will have spoken.

I find really serious and interesting this comment.
