It will be doubly embarassing if "Democrats" like you continue to act like jackasses and work against our party nominees and against healthcare reform. You and Howard Dean can be best friends now Ben. You both hate the Democratic party. Good for you!

Do the numbers really make this race a slam dunk for Hunt?
I would think Marsden’s name recognition might make it a close race, although the Marxists in DC are not helping him at all with their despicable activities in the health care debacle. I can’t believe that someone like Webb will allow Virginia to take the monetary hit for other states like NY, Louis., Conn. and Neb. when we have our own problems. I expect it from someone like Warner who only sees dollar signs for himself, but I thought Webb had more personal integrity than to sell his soul.

Marsden only represents 23% of the district, and in the part that overlaps with the 37th he only won re-election by 30-some votes.
Posted by: VA Blogger | December 21, 2009 at 05:37 PM
Change, yes, the numbers do make this a slam dunk.

Given the abuses going on with our federal government, and the fact that the democrats will have to “own” all of the “train wreck” that they are currently putting our country on course for; wouldn’t democrats really want to give the R’s total control of VA so that they could “blame” any problems on the republicans?
Or maybe their real concern is that a conservative solution for Va’s problems could negate all of the “progressive” (named leftist) ideas; and set the stage for a comeback of “real” America. Thereby giving McD. a stage for much higher office.
Maybe God is trying to get our country back on track, one state at a time.

If Marsden loses, which I think he will I wonder how that will make him feel considering he'll lose by a large margin than Janet O did back in 2007? Obviously the times, political atmosphere and many factors are completely different but still. Brian and his colleague are absolutely correct in that the numbers are on Steve's side and given the fact that social issues are being introduced into this race now I think it'll backfire the exact same way it did for Deeds.
I've talked to Steve a few times and have found him pretty personally and receptive to the issues facing public safety right now. It'll be interesting!

Reliable polling says double digit lead in the 37th.
Posted by: Anon | December 21, 2009 at 07:59 PM
Anon
It was double digit when it began. Do you know what it is now?
Change, you really need to check your theology. Becasue if for some reason you thought the last 8 years was God's will, you need to start over and reread whatever text you believe is holy.

I really don't see a story like this one becoming part of the meme in the next few weeks unless either Hunt or Marsden makes it so. And both of them would be rather foolish for doing so.
Posted by: Gretchen Laskas | December 21, 2009 at 08:41 PM
It would be foolish....But since it's these outside groups doing it they may not have a choice in the matter.
Posted by: DanielK | December 21, 2009 at 09:02 PM
Gretchen's exactly right. The WaPo is making it an issue so they can write an editorial next week, or in their endorsement of Marsden, claiming Hunt is too focused on social issues and use their own story as an example. It's bullshit pre-emptive rationalization, which is sadly all too predictable from the Post.
Posted by: VA Blogger | December 21, 2009 at 09:46 PM
So a Democrat is using pro-choice groups to help get out the vote. What's the Post going to report next? That Hunt is speaking at the Chamber of Commerce?
Heck, I actually CARE about these issues and I'm yawning. Let alone being an apathetic voter scanning the Post for news about the big storm, what the stock market is doing, and the health care debate.
Not to mention having my kids home all this week from school, and trying to find a moment in between the cookie baking!!

NLS, nice to know you're keeping an open mind on one of the most important races of the past 2 years for the Democrats
Posted by: truthnjustice | December 21, 2009 at 10:45 PM
Mark Warner and Barack Obama?
Posted by: VA Blogger | December 22, 2009 at 12:11 AM
if Marsden loses to a incompetent nutcase like Hunt things are in really bad shape.
Hunt is like Coooch with a lobotomy.
Posted by: Spock | December 22, 2009 at 07:27 AM
Spock: That's mean!
Posted by: Anita | December 22, 2009 at 08:37 AM
Anita:It's also accurate. ;-)
And, notice I didn't bring up Hunt's latent homosexual antics in the public classrooms?
I am keeping it above board!
Posted by: Spock | December 22, 2009 at 11:32 AM
^^^Well, you were until you just mentioned those supposed antics.
Although, nobody has actually explained to me what these antics were, and I even asked the question a week or so ago on my blog...
Posted by: Phil Chroniger | December 22, 2009 at 01:44 PM
Phil- As a school board member, Hunt tried to bring "ex-gays" into the public school classrooms to tell kids how not to be gay if they are.
He also tried to do this without the consent of the rest of the school board.
This busted open a pandora's box of questions about Hunt, his own sexual orientation, and his lack of respect for policy procedure and his agenda.
Now, as you are a rightwing blogger, I am sure what he did might not bother you or you might even support it.
But, it has a creepy element to it, at least from where I am standing it does.
People who suppress their sexual instincts tend to let it come out in unhealthy ways.
The chronic problem with "celibate" priests molesting kids is an example of this.
Why would Steve Hunt think it's okay to bring this into kid's classrooms?
And behind the backs of the school board?
The whole thing leaves a sick feeling in my stomach.
Posted by: Spock | December 22, 2009 at 02:56 PM
If compelled to be honest (and I am right now, since Santa Claus might be watching) I would much rather have Steve Hunt as my state Senator than Cuccinelli.
That said, I would also rather have strep throat over scarlet fever, so that doesn't really mean a whole lot!
Posted by: Gretchen Laskas | December 22, 2009 at 03:17 PM
Gretchen- that's like saying I'd rather have Franco over Mussolini ... is it possible to have a reasonable person get elected to that district?
Posted by: Spock | December 22, 2009 at 03:36 PM
Gretchen is so awesome.
Posted by: Anita | December 22, 2009 at 03:49 PM
(sigh) It SHOULD be possible, and it is in that belief that I'm working on this election. Regardless of what happens in January, targeting Dem voters in this district has long term value that we very much need to tap into. There are plenty of Monday-morning quarterback reasons for why Dems have lost and Republicans have won, but let's put it this way -- neither side would be trying to hard to win if they thought it were truly a slam dunk.
Posted by: Gretchen Laskas | December 22, 2009 at 03:49 PM
If we give Cooch credit (as we have in the past) for being qn effective campaigner. And if we concede Janet O. wasn't. And if we think Marsden has demonstrated some political ability. And if the district continues to trend Blue. Then how can you say Marsden doesn't stand a chance? I'm not going to say he can win in a cakewalk, but he has proven he can win. He might do that again. It's not like he has the strongest opponent. I'd call it a tossup.
Anyone who thinks Obama and healthcare impact This election is on crack.
Posted by: Ffx Moderate | December 22, 2009 at 06:04 PM
Marsden won't win. Voters don't like to elect candidates who do not live in their district. Even some democrats don't like that because it is, well, illegal. Some democrats care about silly stuff like that.
What a shame that Marsden's neighbors, and his wife and some, can't vote for him since they don't live in the 37th either.

@Not A Virginia State Senator
12% for Hunt
Posted by: Anon | December 23, 2009 at 11:24 AM
Spock, I honestly don't see where bringing ex-gays into a classroom to teach kids how NOT to be gay if they are has any place in any public school.
I may be a man of the right (as much as you are a man of the left), but issues like being gay or straight are part of the individual's personality and self-being. It shouldn't be a political issue.
I can't say that I endorse such things, and I think some Republicans (namely SoCons) make way too much of an issue over homosexuality. In fact, it's not even an issue! Someone is gay...so what?
This whole ex-gay thing (now that you explained it) disturbs me a little, and gives my twisted sense of humor something to chuckle at (because it's so ridiculous).
However, I'm just speaking for myself in this regard.

Phil - you're about 2 seconds from being labeled a RINO by the Party Purity Police.
Posted by: Ffx Moderate | December 23, 2009 at 12:57 PM
Phil- you are pretty qool for a righty!
I like much of where you are coming from on the personal freedom issue.
Have a great holiday and try to keep your good will on all our fellow humankind for this up coming year.
Peace!

Ffx Moderate - I do know that many of the righty bloggers disagree with me, but they also respect my views. There are a few of those on the right who don't like me for this (though that number has dwindled considerably froma bout 2 1/2 years ago), but c'est la vie...I'd venture to say that most lefty bloggers don't like me either, lol.
Spock, thank you and enjoy your holiday season as well!
