As I've noted, worst mailer I've seen in a long, long time.

Jesus, this is hilariously over-the-top. As a guy who is not at all averse to ticket-splitting for strategic governance purposes, this takes a reasonable argument and warps it beyond the point of sanity.
Lose.

Can't say anything good about this mailer. If you want to talk about fearmongering, you've got a classic example of it right here...coming from a Dem candidate.
Plus, didn't this guy push for Cuccinelli a few years back?
Yeah, that's what I thought...

Marsden is desperate to win this one...he is afraid of how he will be redistricted in a majority GOP house, and figures he gets a better shake in a Dem Majority Senate, especially as his win would give the dems an insurance seat...

Is Marsden (or his mail consultant) dumb enough to still think that just because you send a voter empty rhetoric and vapid statements that voters will simply read them and believe you? Dave Marsden says this stuff (without providing a shred of evidence) and the reader is supposed to go "Must be true."
Marsden thinks his desired constituents are idiots. Unfortunately for him, those "world-class schools" he mentions teach critical thinking skills. And those skills are going to be the death of his campaign and campaigns that spew empty, unsupported fear rhetoric.

Y'all dont understand the strategy. Its funny because all of you are such know it alls. Remind me to tell you why this went out. I will be happy to tell you on the 13th. Would not want to spill the beans before then.

I bet if Ben thinks real hard he can figure out why this mailer went out. Does not mean that Marsden will win..but it does show the path to victory for him

NAVASS - we know why it went out. McDonnell is going to peel off a Democrat or two in the Senate in a Republican area with an appointment and thus switch the Senate back Republican with Bolling's tie breaking vote. Marsden winning would stop that from happening. This has been discussed for a while now. It's no secret.
It's also way too much inside baseball for the average voter to use when deciding who to vote for. It certainly didn't help Republicans when we made the same argument about both Congress and the Senate or the White House last year.

Oh it is? Too much for the average voter. Come on Brian you are a smart guy. The Dem Caucus is not stupid. They did not just trip into the majority. There must be another reason. Think real hard. It is in reality a brillant piece/

NAVSS- Uh, if you are thinking for turnout, I couldn't disagree more. Most Dems would laugh at this piece. To scare people they have to believe it first.
Posted by: Not Larry Sabato | December 30, 2009 at 01:13 AM
I like the starkness of the piece; the average voter is not coming out at this election and Dem core clearly needs to be motivated. Regardless of your opinion of Dave M., the stakes are extremely high and it is appropriate to have it laid out so vividly, especially in a short-term, low turnout election. Gets maybe the early voters thinking and going.

Can't wait to see The Addams Family mailer next!

I'm a Democrat, but this is awful.
Posted by: Anita | December 30, 2009 at 08:33 AM
Ben's right - this piece isn't going to make an ounce of difference for turnout. It's too over the top. Even if we tried we couldn't destroy the schools, end abortion or screw up traffic any more than it already is. The piece sucks.

NAVSS--
The only "hidden" reason this mailer went out is because the candidate is an idiot and the mail vendor is a hack. The only POSSIBLE value it has would be to make sure hard core Dems knew there was a special. But there are 100 ways to do that and that would be more effective than this "chicken little" bullshit.
