I love this story, but I don't think Cooch has been one of those pushing this nonsense. It has been right wing crackpots on the national level who have been pushing this one.
Bachmann, in particular, with her "they are going to use the census forms to round you up and put you in camps" lunacy has been the point person on this. And the irony is that Minnesota is on the cusp of losing a seat in Congress with the next census. She may crazy talk herself right out of a job if her brain dead followers heed her advice and don't participate in the census.
The Republicans have a shrinking base as it is. Now they are doing their best to see to it that that shrinking base is under counted with their crazy rhetoric.
You just can't make this stuff up.
Hilarious.

C'mon Ben. Texas returns are only 7% below the national average. And the fact that some heavily GOP counties haven't turned in their census forms can easily be explained by other factors as well - like education and median income.
Median household income Texas wide is $49,078. Median household income in King County is $35,625. Briscoe is $29,917, Culberson is $25,882, and Newton county is $28,500.
It's more likely that income levels mean more than political identification.
But if it gets your hopes up that the census return rates around going to be depressed because of "anti-government conservatism" and this will lead you guys to take back the house in 2011, feel free to think that way. It'll make reading your excuses the day after you don't take back the house all the more funny.

I don't know that we will take back in 2011, but this redistricting creates the seats through 2019.
Posted by: Not Larry Sabato | March 30, 2010 at 03:04 PM
Brian, aren't you worried about Congresswoman Bachmann's warning. I'm sure she wouldn't say insane things just to get attention. They are going top throw all the Republicans into camps if they fill out those census forms!
We must get the word out to Red State America that they must not allow themselves to be counted!
Posted by: Dan | March 30, 2010 at 03:15 PM
I think most Republicans ignore Michelle Bachmann like I do.
Posted by: Brian W. Schoeneman | March 30, 2010 at 03:17 PM
Brian, would that it were so. But most Republicans do seem to listen to her.
She is a headliner. She is one of the brightest stars of the modern Republican Party. She is a regular on the party's television network.
Posted by: Dan | March 30, 2010 at 03:55 PM
She's a regular because she routinely says off-the-wall things and off-the-wall = ratings. She's not in the leadership. She's the Republican equivalent of Alan Grayson.
Posted by: Brian W. Schoeneman | March 30, 2010 at 04:13 PM
I was going to compare her with Alan Grayson, but Brian beat me to it. How about Alcee "No Rules" Hastings?
Posted by: HisRoc | March 30, 2010 at 04:22 PM
Texas is ONLY 7% below the national average in returning census forms? I wonder how that 7% translates? It seems to me that could mean a lot less representation for some of these areas.
I'm not happy about it, ind you. All Americans should be represented--even the ones who don't want it. But if they won't fill out a very simple form, what can you do?
Posted by: LAS | March 30, 2010 at 06:32 PM
The census response rates so far only reflect those who have replied to the initial mailing. The Census Bureau will spend the next few weeks (and several hundreds of millions of dollars) tracking down the remaining responses by telephone and by knocking on doors.
I don't really see where the Texas response rate of 44% is any indication of a census boycott. Their responses, while below the national average, lag to about the same extent as some blue states, such as New York at 45% and California at 48%. On the other hand, Census Conspiracy Theorist Michele Bachmann's home state of Minnesota has a return rate of 56%.
Move along folks, nothing to see here...
Posted by: HisRoc | March 30, 2010 at 06:59 PM
LAS, you go to their house and harass them. That's what census takers do. If they can count the homeless, they can count the folks in East Texas who don't bother turning in their forms.
Posted by: Brian W. Schoeneman | March 30, 2010 at 08:22 PM
I gots my census forms, and I'll fill it out and all, but half of the questions seem to be targeting the Latino community.
I also smeared banana on it...
Posted by: Spock | March 30, 2010 at 08:50 PM
The teabaggers and wingnut conservatives should stick to their principles and refuse to complete the census!
Since they are planning to secede from the U.S., according to Rick Perry, representation in congress is irrelevant.

Ben,
Why is it that every time there is a rational discussion of differing viewpoints on NLS, Spock and Google have to come in, squat, and take a dump in the middle of it?
And they have the gall to call other posters "trolls"...
Posted by: HisRoc | March 30, 2010 at 09:39 PM
The fact that Ken has nothing to do with this story yet is linked to it confirms something I have suspected: Not Larry Sabato has a hard-on for Ken.
Posted by: Steven | March 30, 2010 at 09:41 PM
Actually, Bachman backed off a little when it was pointed out that HER district was the one that would go away unless Minnesota's population goes up.

"Ben,
Why is it that every time there is a rational discussion of political viewpoints on NLS, change and HisRoc have to come in, squat, and take a Republican talking points dump in the middle of it?"

Did I mention that HisRoc is a paid Republican troll?

Google,
Thanks for your latest brain fart. You and Spock can always be counted on to lower the average IQ level on NLS when it spikes too high. Are you on board with him about that GWB 9/11 conspiracy thing or are you concentrating on those alien abductions that victimized you?
Paid Republican troll? Can you tell me where I can get my paycheck? Damned if I know who is supposed to be paying me. It sure as Hell isn't the Republicans since they didn't invite me to the party at Voyeur West.
Posted by: HisRoc | March 31, 2010 at 12:44 AM
HisRoc sounds about as moronic as James!
HisRoc you didn't get invited to the Voyeur West because you're not fun, chicks and cool people don't dig you.
And lot of the "higher ups" knew there was going to be a terrorist attack, and Bush was informed about it.
He did nothing because he was a disaster as a president.
Deal with it, as much as the Dems suck your party sucks a whole lot more!
And further more, you are always the one attacking, I never called anyone a troll or even attacked you.
Stop playing the whiny little bich.

In other News: It has been reported that it will, in fact, RAIN in April!
Fear not, for NLS will be the first blogger to lay the blame for this where is rightly belongs... at the feet of Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.
NLS's obsession with Ken is getting a little perverse. He seems to be losing it a little bit more with each passing day.
Posted by: A Voter | March 31, 2010 at 12:08 PM
As usual, Ben is wrong.

Brian - Well then that's Ken's fault, as well! Just ask NLS.
Posted by: A Voter | March 31, 2010 at 04:59 PM
See what happens when you try to compliment HisRoc by saying that the Republicans might be paying him to troll; even Michael Steele is not dumb enough to pay His Roc the inept teabagger for anything.
The truth is that Ben Pays His Roc and change to troll and increase Ben's hits!
Posted by: www.google.com/accounts/o8/id?id=AItOawkYqVwrKwZRlpD2yAerf60smeBA4DpEeUc | March 31, 2010 at 05:20 PM
Google, you know I get paid about 8 cents per 1,000 hits from the ads, right?
Do you think I am paying them 3 cents each for every 1,000 times they come here- and keeping the rest?
LOL.
Posted by: Not Larry Sabato | March 31, 2010 at 05:22 PM
Google,
Your talents are wasted here. You should spend some time where you would be more appreciated. I suggest the men's room at a bus station.
BTW, take Spock with you.
Posted by: HisRoc | March 31, 2010 at 05:56 PM
Ben,
Our conspiracy has been discovered by the wise giggle. Why hide it now???
That being done I am preparing one thousand posts so that I can put some gas in my mower for the spring cutting.
Posted by: change | March 31, 2010 at 06:01 PM
Change,
I have been in contact with headquarters. Google and Spock are scheduled for pick up and transport to a secret RNC prison in black helicopters as soon as their surrogates are in place. Spock will be replaced by a 12-year old Girl Scout in a training bra who won her class talent contest by playing "We Are The World" on a kazoo. Google will be replaced by a 50-year old virgin who lives in his parents' basement playing "glitter rock" from the 80s in his underwear while trolling blogs.
Cheney has been briefed and approves the operation. Palin is out of pocket getting her weekly electrolysis treatment for her mustache.
Agent HisRoc
Posted by: HisRoc | March 31, 2010 at 08:02 PM
HisRoc- Does this RNC prison have vegan food and wifi?
Posted by: Spock | March 31, 2010 at 08:37 PM
HisRoc, you got a critical fact wrong. The Republican/teabagger crowd doesn't possess the black helicopters. The black helicopters are owned by the Zionist Occupation Government and will be used to transport the Communist Chinese troops that will be used to enslave all the "real" Americans while the ZOG imposes one world government and destroys American sovereignty.
The fact that you would get such a basic element of the mythology wrong makes you immediately suspect. You have been outed as a double agent!
NOTICE: HisRoc is a leftist agent of the new world order.
Posted by: Dan | April 01, 2010 at 08:27 AM
Dan- "Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous Communist plot we have ever had to face?"
Grain alcohol and rain water!!!!
Posted by: Spock | April 01, 2010 at 10:38 AM
I just like the fact that someone was able to bring up ZOG in a political discussion.
I find that to be both random and awesome!
Posted by: A Voter | April 01, 2010 at 11:18 AM
Ben:
HisRoc and change work cheap!
Posted by: TomPaine | April 01, 2010 at 04:02 PM
TP,
We also only accept cash so that we don't lose our government welfare and foodstamps. Obama pays our mortgage, car payment, phone and internet bills and now we get “free” healthcare.
We just do this for a little gas money for the mower, and drug habit (although we hope there will be free drugs for everyone soon).
Someone pass me another "blue" pill.
Posted by: change | April 01, 2010 at 05:15 PM
Change,
Stop it. It isn't nice to pick on people who are, what did Rahm Emmanuel call them?
Posted by: HisRoc | April 01, 2010 at 05:33 PM
HisRoc, Ben, and change appear to be infringing on the copyrights of the Three Stooges.
