yeah, i'd seen that at its original blog.
interesting comment there, though, from one who says Deeds owes everyone an apology because he kept the state of his marriage (or the unravelling thereof) a secret.

Mrs. Johnson is not terribly bright is she? Another example of how having money doesn't bestow any particular wisdom even though some who have it foolishly believe that it does.
The woman ignored all of Bob McDonnell's history as being a very well right of center politician with deep roots in the "use government power to enforce a socially conservative social agenda" crowd. She chose to ignore all that evidence and instead accept the purely tactical campaign rhetoric that said, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that McDonnell was really, truly, cross my heart and hope to die, a moderate.
What a damned fool. She has no business being surprised.
She shouldn't be mad at McDonnell for showing his true nature. A nature that any fool could plainly see. She should be mad at herself for being such a complete and total dope.

Something about Deeds drove the African American support away.
It made Sheila so angry she ended up making some very bad choices.
The question I had at the time was, what was making everyone so angry at Deeds?
He was a bit of a putz, but there is something more to this story....

Why does it have to be Deeds fault? Why can't it just be that this woman was an idiot and got what she deserved.

I have absolutely no personal knowledge of anything about Deeds and African-American support. But big business has set Appalachian people against African-Americans ever since they began industrializing after the Civil War. If the two groups fight each other, they won't realize how much they have in common politically, economically and even culturally and what they might achieve if they worked together. There's a really good book that traces the connection between civil rights advancement and suddenly "discovering" Appalachia again and other topics called BLACKS IN APPALACHIA. It has always served people in power -- and the same tactic seemed have have worked again, doing (in my opinion) a great DISservice to the people of Virginia.

From what I remember, there were also issues with Deeds and Doug Wilder, and maybe a few other important African American political figures?
I seem to remember noticing a trend of tension during the campaign between Deeds and the African American community.

Interesting point, Gretchen. The black population in Virginia's southwest counties is what? About 3 percent? It reminds me of that Flannery OConner story, "The Artificial Nigger".
