James Young

Apparently, the supporters of President Barry and Perriello have an honesty that the former lack.

I was particularly impressed by the guy who asserted that "Jesus was a socialist."

Rtwng Extrmst

Looks like Democrats caught in a moment of honesty to me...

Geoff

Just go to a Sarah Palin rally and have a sticker that says "I believe in the separation of church and state" and you'd get the same reaction. So this is pretty stupid.

Joe Taylor

I would be more shocked - but I've been to the Downtown Mall before, it and other parts of C-Ville are OUT there, great restaurants and music venues though.

Jack

"Jesus was a socialist"?

What a moron.

cvllelaw

Actually, Jesus was a socialist in the same sense that right-wingers think that Obama is a socialist. If one defines socialism accurately -- meaning that they want to create an economic system in which the state owns the means of production -- neither is a socialist. If you define socialism as the right wing does -- in terms of thinking that we are all our brothers' keepers, and that the rich should contribute to the well-being of the poor -- then they are both socialists.

Joe

cvllelaw

Big difference is how you define and achieve socialism
Yes, Jesus was a 'socialist' in the sense that he encouraged others to look after one another - not that that's even a value socialism has a monopoly on, but he would not have been a socialist in modern times, rather, he would be a Classical Liberal; unless, Socialism were to mean that decisions should arise from society - ala Hayekian spontaneous order. I would agree that Obama is not a socialist, he is a Fascist; he doesn't want the state to own the means of production - just to control them.

Why is the Virginia director of AFP - Ben Marchi - doing this the weekend before the election? Doesn't he have better things to do?

Spock

Yeah, what is wrong with Socialism?

Sorry that the Capitalist jerks from "Americans for PIgs" can't seem to make it a dirty word in one of the more intelligent areas of Virginia.

Jack

Nowhere does Jesus advocate TAKING from the rich to contribute to the well-being of the poor. That is the key.

As for 0bama, could you tell me again why the government owns so much of GM, and illegally shafted to bondholders to do it?

Not Ben

Bingo, Jack. Government confiscation is indeed what separates Obama/Perriello socialists from anything "socialist" about Jesus.

But you can always expect mr. cvillelaw to be disingenuous in his strained attempts to defend Democrat-style socialism. Nothing new there.

Ghost of Ted Dalton

Why do people feel the need to start pointless hostility?

I can't stand these people showing up in C'ville to be obnoxious in a crowd that they know has no interest in their agenda.

I feel the same way about left-wingers who show up for a Palin rally in a place like Hanover. Really? You're not there to do anything productive except try to get in arguments for "shock" effect.

To both sides, "Grow up." Showing up at opposition rallies just to be "in your face" is immature.

TJDavis

Ben Marchi is a true American Patriot. That's all I know. Marchi for Lieutenant Governor!

J Sykes

Good call JACK! The jesus I know, said what's mine is yours!; not what's yours is mine!
Ghost of Ted D: if I'm not mistaken, the state director of that group passing out the stickers is from Charlottesville while many of the folks waiting in line are not. As a matter of fact, the video shows that one lady isn't even from the usa, so just "who" exactly do you mean when you say "those people" showed up?

DemRulz

I wonder if those guys would take a "Mcarthyism isn't cool" bumper sticker. They probably don't know what that means, and they certainly don't know what "socialism" means. Providing government loans to banks, insurers, and auto companies to stabilize their industries isn't "socialism" - it's "saving capitalism." Nationalizing health care providers is socialism - health care reform that relies on private insurance is not. Government take over of energy companies is socialism; command and control regulations are the traditional capitalist way of environmental protection; cap and trade to encourage initiative is a free market solution.
You can question the widsom of these approaches - they go too far or not far enough- but rational discussion doesn't fit on a bumper sticker - name calling does.

Spock

I think with the McArthyites making such a stink over the word "Socialism" it is actually attracting people to it as a backlash.

After watching T-Baggers acting so badly by stomping on young girl's heads and illegally handcuffing the press to prevent them from reporting, people now are going to be more open about being everything the T-Baggers are against.

Red baiting is always a bad tactic, and the koch brothers and friends are going to learn this the hard way.

Jack

What's wrong? Is it only leftists that can get violent? Socialists and anarchists have been violent for over a century. You see one bit of right-wing frustration unleashed, and THAT is unacceptable.

Spock

Jack, it is really hard to match up with the right wing violence such as:

OK City bombing

Holocaust Museum shooter (yes he was a right winger connected with Willis Carto and the "Liberty Lobby"

The Pentagon shooter who was into the "Von Mises" right wing economic scam

Numerous violence at town hall meetings and now the more recent.

What do they have to be frustrated about?

They had control of the country for 8 yrs and messed it up beyond belief and THEY are frustrated?

No, the right wing t-baggers attract violent, boneheaded and racist individuals...and to be honest with you, having any of them holding office is going to be the detriment of this country.

Mr. Jefferson

Speaking of violence and heated rhetoric in politics, as well as "Classic Charlottesville", I'll just leave this here:

Not Bubby

Ghost of Ted Dalton is typical of modern leftwingnuts: they love free speech as long as people agree with them. As soon as a conservative dares to exercise his 1st Amendment rights, Ghost of Ted Dalton and his ilk demand that they STFU.

change

Spock,
Your refusal to condemn “assault” from the left amazes me. I would think you would agree that it is wrong no matter which side one takes.

Can someone remind me of the term that might be used for those who think that it is OK if their side does wrong but not OK if their opposition does the same wrong?

wow

OMG - the assholes being assholes - no news hear.

Spock

Change- I never saw anything that was "okay", all I saw was a few a few angry black dudes ripped up a sign.

I know when a black man rips up a sign it was considered much graver than a white men beating up a woman and stepping on her head back in the days of "To Kill a Mockingbird" but I thought those days were over...

Every day may be a new day, let's have deep clean breath primary, and be in very good mood and thank you a lot to your weblog I seriously loved studying this posting.

Ben Kyber

Like James Young, I was also particularly impressed by the guy who asserted that "Jesus was a socialist."

I'm always impressed when people highlight prominent theories of Christology that date back to the earliest church fathers. It doesn't take the word "socialism" to understand just what Jerome and John Chrysostom were talking about, after all...

Joe Belleau

Fun video from VA 5th CD here:

jps

this is a stupid debate. Jesus couldn't be a socialist because capitalism and socialism or anything like them didn't exists back then. But Jesus was certainly a communalist . . . is anyone going to really try to argue with that? and he certainly did not look kindly at the hording of material wealth at the expense of the community. Thus in Matthew, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." and "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

Just sayin'

Cvillian

Yeah, well just before this video was shot, Obama supporters went violent all over the very peaceful AFP rally in Lee Park in Charlottesville:
A week ago Friday, Obama came to Charlottesville, Virginia to support the now-failed campaign of Tom Perriello (D-VA5)where his supporters threatened and attacked Tea Party & Americans for Prosperity peaceful protesters. The irony of their racist tirades is that AFP, who hosted this event, has as its Virginia Chairman, a black man!
