So, of the hundreds of homicides and the thousands of “crimes” in NY city, they have linked a whopping 35 guns to VA . WOW…

There have been hundreds of stabbings and scores of homicides from knives, maybe we should have background checks at pampered chef parties.

Colt's Fan

Liberal anti-2nd amendment trash tv. Cho didn't get his gun at a gun show, and we all know that... stop playing bait & switch. Don't like the 2nd amendment of the Constitution, change it via politics, otherwise, it's here, it's real, and live with it (and stay away from our gun shows)!

Brian W. Schoeneman

Virginia media actually has some idea what they're talking about when it comes to guns, gun shows and the "gunshow loophole."

If New York wants to blame Virginia for the fact that 35 guns sold in Virginia have somehow found their way up to New York, fine. But the fact that criminals go to New York to commit crimes shouldn't make an ounce of difference in affecting my rights.

Typical emotional tie-in to Virginia Tech that was completely irrelevant to the story - yet still more political abuse of the Tech tragedy to accomplish a political goal unrelated to what happened there.

The graphic there is pretty funny with the numbers - if you look closely, Virginia has the FEWEST number of guns used in gun crime in New York. Every other state highlighted has far more. I wonder why they picked us out?

actually, it is great information for everyone. We all people must have to take care of this thing. I am agreed with Brian W. Schoenman.

Ricky J.

I'm about as pro-gun as anyone could ever expect to be. I own a variety of semi-automatic pistols and rifles and have a valid Virginia and Florida concealed carry permit. While working in the General Assembly as a legislative staffer I carried concealed in the Capitol regularly, which is a right afforded to valid CCP permit holders.
However, the private sales laws are a bridge too far. As a gun owner, I want everyone who purchases a gun to pass a background check. I have never spent more than 2 hours waiting for a background check to run through, but that's beside the point. When criminals commit crimes with guns, liberals use it as an excuse to restrict the rights of law abiding citizens. Make sure everyone who buys a gun passes a background check. Peroid.

Bubby Hussein, Hillbilly Sheikh

Well stated. As a gun owner, I stand with Ricky J, and Col. Gerald Massengill, Chair of the Virginia Tech Review Panel. No responsible gun owner wants to sell his gun to a mentally impaired individual or a criminal. While the next "He-With-No-Name" will not purchase his gun at a gun shop, he will still be able to purchase his gun at a gun show. End the gun show loop hole.

jack

So, how many of those guns in New York were traced to private sales at Virgina gun shows without a background check?

TFred

Typical anti-gun media. Ignore the actual problem, the fact that New York City is full of CRIMINALS!

Not enough? Guess what! It is ALREADY ILLEGAL for an out-of-state resident to buy a handgun in the state of Virginia. Adding one more law will not make a criminal suddenly decide to start obeying the law!

And by the way, your reporter was almost certainly breaking the law by taping inside a gun show, which generally prohibit photography. Makes them a Trespasser... Where's the reporting on that?

Bubby Hussein, Hillbilly Sheikh

BTW Colin Goddard is the kind of stand-up guy that makes a Hokie proud to be a Hokie. Leading from the front! Ut Prosim. Thanks again Colin.

Wolfwood

So, to be clear, closing the "Gun Show Loophole" means that you have to have the government's permission to own a gun.

While we're at it, let's close the "paper money loophole" and the "babies without a background check loophole" as well. After all, drug dealers use cash almost exclusively. Babies born to unfit parents are a huge drain on the system.

Any other loopholes we should close? How about the "voting on a bill without reading it first loophole?" Actually, I like that one.

Valley Indie

Please keep posting this gun-grabber stuff. That'll sure help more Democrats get elected out here in God's Country (a/k/a, up and down the Valley).

Most Hokies I know are not in favor of changing our current law. That's because it works very well the way it is.

Timmy

For 2009, 10,184 guns recovered and traced in NY, with 443 linked to a VA purchase (1819 traced to NY purchases). Try cleaning up your own backyard first! Also, if you could "trace" them, doesn't reason tell you that most are linked to a dealer that is required to keep the paperwork, serial numbers, etc. A legitimate reporter would break it down further to see exactly how many came from private dealers, but that defeats the objective or their story.

If the federal gov’t mandated that everyone, over 18y/o, purchase and carry a gun. (we know they can do this by their commerce clause argument in the Obamacare issue.)
Then we would not have had the issue at Tech, because when that lunatic started shooting innocents he would have been put down by a citizens “providing for the common defense” and “promot(ing) the general welfare”, of our country…

Varealest

I would go with a periodic sanity check on all gun owners.

change

Varealest,
What about the problem with the so called “loophole”?
If someone does not own a gun, and chooses to go buy one for a “bad” purpose he would not have had his “periodic sanity check” .

Should we therefore “check” the sanity of EVERY individual because they “might” choose to own a gun (or some other fatal weapon) now or in the future?

Or…Maybe we could check the sanity of only those crazy “gun toting conservatives” …..

But….damn…… we would miss that poor liberal (ooops progressive) fruitcakes like the one that wanted to kill the board members in Fla…

But hey, we could always “outlaw” all guns, that way only “outlaws” would have guns… do you think that will work any better than a sign on the Mexican border saying “do not trespass”.???
LMAO

Bubby Hussein, Hillbilly Sheikh

If you are mentally defective, or a criminal come to Virginia to purchase your guns! Your best bet is a gun show.

Wolfwood

If you are mentally defective, or a criminal come to Virginia to purchase your guns! Your best bet is a gun show.

Actually, no. But if believing that a "Gun Show Loophole" exists and that it's the best place to buy a black-market gun keeps you away from them, I'm all for it.

Hints:
-There is nothing you can do at a gun show that you can't do at a gun shop or at pretty much any other parking lot. Well, other than buying elk jerky, perhaps.
-Violent criminals don't usually obey regulatory laws, either.
-Retail sales of guns are highly regulated. Also, guns aren't all that profitable at retail. No sane dealer is going to take the risk if they think you're shady.
-Handguns and automatic rifles have been made by illiterate mountain dwellers in Afghanistan and jungle tribesmen in East Timor. If you have a Home Depot and access to the internet, you can make one, too.
-Just because a gun was bought at a gun show doesn't mean that it was then sold to a street dealer. Odds are that it was obtained in a burglary (unless you think selling a $300-600 revolver for $75 is good business).

Lone Gunman

THEY FAILED TO NOTE THAT THE VA TECH KILLER, CHO, BOUGHT HIS GUNS FROM A LEGAL DEALER AND HAD A BACKGROUND CHECK RUN BEFORE HE GOT THEM!!!

THIS ARTICLE AND THE GUY THAT DID THE TAPING NEED TO EXPOSE THEIR REAL AGENDA HERE, WHICH IS TOTAL GUN BANS!! THE SUPPOSED GUNSHOW LOOPHOLE IS JUST THE FIRST STEP OF MANY!!

WHEN GUNS ARE OUTLAWED, ONLY OUTLAWS WILL HAVE GUNS!

DEAL WITH THE CRIMINAL ELEMENT HERE, NOT THE LAW ABIDING CITIZENS!!

Not Ben

I never cease to be amazed at how many dumbasses there are who actually believe that any "loophole" exists.

Once again, for the slow-witted folks reading this. There is no such thing. The truth never stops the gun grabbers from trying to grab more guns, though.

Bubby Hussein, Hillbilly Sheikh

Ha! The video demonstrates the Gunshow Loophole in action. Who is the dumbass, dumbass?

Wolfwood

Bubby Hussein, Hillbilly Sheikh,

You just outed yourself as an imbecile.

Again, a hint:
-Nothing was done in this video that couldn't legally be done on your front porch, in the parking lot of Wal-Mart, or inside the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond.

For Bonus Points:
Explain the connection between the shootings at Virginia Tech and gun shows. Degree of difficulty: "they both involve guns" isn't enough.

Bubby Hussein, Hillbilly Sheikh

Q: Machinegun Kelly, why do you rob banks?
A: Because that's where the money is.

Q: Criminal Felon/Crazy, why do you go to Virginia gun shows?
A: Because that's where I can have my pick of guns without a background check.

DanielK

The word "Gun Show Loophole" appears to be a little deceptive actually. Anyone who goes to a "Gun Show" will note there are many people who wind up in hand cuffed and in a State Police cruiser on their way to jail because a background check turns up they have a protective order out against them or are a convicted felon and they falsely filed out a form.

They introduce gun shows because it bothers people that so many guns are in one place even though there is rarely violence at a gun show. This has nothing to do with gun shows but more specifically private dealers. The same "loop hole" purchases can be made outside of gun shows. It's just a deceptive phrase to make.

Also, regarding guns and crimes.....Let's face the real world reality; if a criminal wants to get their hands on a gun they are going to find a way to do it. Closing the "gun show loophole" will not prevent it but just require criminals to figure out another way to find it. Let's strictly enforce our current gun laws like modeling more efforts after Project Exile (which had support from both the Brady Organization and the NRA) which focuses on bad people who possess firearms to use in crimes.

citizenofmanassas

Once again the yankees are blaming us for their problems.

Maybe if it were not for liberal judges in NY who keep letting criminals off the hook for their crimes, there would not be so many criminals running around in the State.

Not Ben

Wolfwood, it's not nice to confuse Bubby with facts. You gotta remember, he was one of those kids who rode the short bus to school.

That, and he's still bitter about the Dems getting butt raped in the last two elections.

Mike

Virginia is just like most states - no paperwork or background check to buy guns - see map at http://www.opencarry.org/privatetransfers.html

Bubby Hussein, Hillbilly Sheikh

Here is a more useful interactive map to show how different states deal with gun trafficking to criminals and the mentally defective:
http://www.tracetheguns.org/#/laws/4/

..you know like that guy Bedell who shot two sentrys at the Pentagon this spring - previously ruled mentally defective, declared ineligible for purchase, drove to Vegas and bought his crime weapon using the Gun Show Loophole.

Doesn't that news anchor kind of remind you of John Stewart?
