Some big news coming out of Fairfax County. After the Democrats had a disaster of a meeting to pick their School Board endorsements a few weeks ago, another shake up has taken place. Endorsed candidate Charise Espy Glassman is out- leaving another spot open.
Lots of names are being thrown around tonight, including multiple other previous candidates for the endorsement. But one name is being mentioned more than any other- which is Lola Quintela, Vice Chair of the FCDC.
It's hard to imagine a stronger school board candidate than Lola, who has been a PTA leader, after school language tutor amongst other education credentials- but also has the political saavy to run a countywide campaign in Fairfax.
Go Lola! Really hoping to hear she has decided to run.
What happened to Charisse?

Jeannie Armstrong is a much stronger candidate for at Large.

She has been endorsed by Tina Hone and Greg Brandon. Neither of the other prior candidates will seek the endorsements.
Lola hasn't been seen at an FCDC function in months/years.

Why would anyone elect a chair, nevermind a VICE chair?

What a surprise about Charisse!! Any idiot could see this coming.

Have you resigned from FCDC yet or are you waiting to be expelled?

Her son is a public figure at William and Mary. Very bright if a little weird.

You Democrats already have a candidate running...except she has taken a Republican spot...Maybe since we all know what she is maybe you should let her run as a Democrat in this now open spot!!!!!!!!

I don't intend to resign. Why should I? For wanting to keep a blatantly unqualified candidate off the school board? I am a Democrat, just like you. Unlike you, I put the needs of kids in Fairfax County above loyalty to the party.
I happen to agree, by the way, that Jeannie Armstrong would be an excellent choice for the party's endorsement. Please don't hold this against her.

I won't but others will. That's how much you've antagonized folks in FCDC.
You should resign because you publicly support Republican candidates for School Board. That's your right as a citizen but you gave up that right, voluntarily, when you signed the form to join FCDC; you specifically promised not to publicly support opponents of Democratic candidates. It's in bold letters on the form. Apparently your word means nothing.
Anyone who values honesty and integrity would demand your resignation.

It's a nonpartisan race. Or at least it is supposed to be. Every one on the ballot is listed as independent. If the Democrats endorse good candidates, I'll support them. Now that Charisse is out, you have a second chance.
Posted by: mariaallen | July 02, 2011 at 10:47 AM
Maria, you confuse form with substance to obscure your lack of integrity.
Since the first year that School Boards have been elected, those elections have been dominated by candidates endorsed by the two parties.
Maybe next year the General Assembly will drop the veneer of nonpartisanship and recognize the reality.
You made a promise to FCDC members, which apparently means nothing to you, and you've broken that promise repeatedly.
Why should anyone believe anything else you say, ever?

The current school board is weak, and our schools suffer as a result. So whom FCDC chooses to endorse really matters. Parents trust the Democratic Party to make good choices and endorse those candidates who will best serve our schools and our kids. Instead, politicians and then FCDC members lined up behind a candidate who was unqualified for a whole number of reasons, rejecting knowledgable candidates like Greg. Even Ryan, although young, showed great potential and would have been a far better choice.
Whether or not you like it, the election is legally nonpartisan until the law is changed. In fact, our school board operates as a nonpartisan body. Members take off their party hats once the votes are cast. A partisan school board would not serve the best interests of the public.

Maria
Distracting from your lack of integrity again.
You gave your word. Your signature is on the document.
Ryan deprive Greg of his well deserved place on the FCDC ticket.
Direct your calumny at the FCDC members who voted for that empty suit. Ryan is 28 years old, has accomplished nothing in his life, and knew nothing about the issues facing FCPS. Even he knew his substantive background could not face serious scrutiny and duck any serious questioning. His was a campaign of pure narcissistic ego and absolutely no substance.
Resign now, Maria, and preserve a shred of dignity.
Don't and become the Arthur Purvis of your generation.

Ryan is 25. He was also the only former fcps student running. Apparently to you an empty suit is an fcps alum trying to represent students' interests with a perspective other than that of a 50-year-old helicopter parent? Sorry that guy who bragged about raising the most money got trounced. He was a real charmer.
Posted by: politifact | July 03, 2011 at 06:12 PM
The problem with the School Board is that it only focuses on niche issues of the day that pisses off whatever group of parents have the most money to blow at any given time. Ryan was the only candidate to go beyond the niche issues and expand a view on how FCPS could become better. Martin, don't hate the man for being a more knowledgeable and worldly thinker than you can ever be.

Martin,
The candidate who knew nothing about issues facing FCPS was the one who got the most votes - Charisse. At least Ryan knew what he didn't know and didn't make ridiculously inaccurate statements. Ryan is very smart. He would have learned quickly.
The form I signed said:
“No Democratic Committee member or officer of any Democratic Committee shall publicly support, endorse or assist any candidate opposed to a Democratic nominee."
Is this what you are referring to? Explain exactly how I violated this.
Posted by: mariaallen | July 03, 2011 at 07:27 PM
Politifalse
exactly what is a helicopter parent?
Ryan had no business running because he knows little about FCPS. He would have been led around by the nose by Kathy Smith and Jack Dale which is why they want him to replace Charisse.
Maria - your photograph with your arm around Louise Epstein, opponent of Janie Strauss, appeared in McLean Patch together with laudatory words about Ms. Epstein violates that promise. And you know that.
Spare us any attempts to distinguish between "nominee" and "endorsee."
You've broken the promise made on that form.
Resign.

I'm demanding your resignation.

Martin you're really annoying. I can't imagine how awful it is to interact with you in person. Get over yourself, you're not that important.
