A little DPVA news tonight out of Fairfax, as Brian Moran showed up to FCDC trying to convince Democrats in the largest county in Virginia that he should keep his job as Chairman of the DPVA.
While Moran did not address his position as President of the "for-profit college" industry that is fighting against education reforms pressed for by President Barack Obama, he did address one issue swirling around him: candidate recruitment.
Moran claimed to the assembled Democrats that the reason we didn't have many Democratic candidates around Virginia this year was the districts were drawn to be too Republican and we would "not be fielding" Democrats there.
Needless to say, my email box was lighting up after this meeting. Moran was speaking to the wrong county committee when he made these claims.
In Fairfax, Moran allowed two state legislative candidates to run without Democratic opposition. Tim Hugo would be very difficult to defeat in his district, but Moran also allowed Tom Rust to run without Democratic opposition. Rust's district was carried by Barack Obama, Mark Warner, Jody Wagner and Steve Shannon in 2008/2009 and performed 14 points better in margin that the state for Creigh Deeds. Local Democratic turncoat Stevens Miller even got 46% here in 2009 versus Rust.
I'm not surprised that Moran lied to FCDC to try to save his own hide- but I am surprised that he did so in such a stupid way. Why would you claim in a county with a heavily Democratic seat that went uncontested that only strong GOP seats were left unopposed? Is Moran this stupid, or just so arrogant that he thought no one in the crowd noticed?
If Moran doesn't resign soon, I suggest we all begin planning for the 2012 state convention in Fairfax and trying to ensure a resolution strongly backing President Obama's fight against the for-profit colleges is passed by the convention. That seems to be the best route to begin alerting the public to the fraud that is currently serving as Chairman of the DPVA.
Agree 100%

Did Chairman Moran publicly and consistently speak out against the redistricting deal that gave the republicans the power to draw the HOD lines? No, he didn't. Does anyone really believe that none of the 46(!)HOD races where the Dems had no candidate were worth contesting? No, we don't believe that for a minute!

Tom Rust's seat is unfortunately the clearest one to call into question Democratic targeting in the last cycle. No excuse for not targeting a district that has otherwise been so dependable for Dems.... Even if the caucus was to blame, B Mo could have gotten them on the phone and asked them why they were conceding such a strong blue district to the GOP?

There are two reasons no one ran against Rust. First, Rust is still popular in the Town of Herndon, and no Dem there really wants to run against him because of that. Two, the other half of the district is in Loudoun, where LCDC sucks so bad, there's no GOTV, no election day poll coverage, nothing that would help a Dem candidate win.
Tom Rust is a mini-me version of Frank Wolf. Everyone seems to think he's a moderate independent because he once was, many years ago. He isn't any longer, nor is Frank Wolf, since they vote en-bloc with Republicans 99% of the time.
The 86th district will go Democratic whenever Rust steps down, or if a candidate is up and running when the next wave year for Dems. That's been the issue - Dems either had a decent candidate in a bad year (Stevens Miller) or mediocre candidates/poor campaigns/no campaigns in good years (Jay Donaghue for example).

Good post, and holy crap are you Dems in bad shape. Why hasn't Moran resigned yet after his horrible performance???
NJSM, the LCDC is absolutely the worst political train wreck I've ever seen, and they're looking to continue that trend with the people they're considering for their next Chairman.

I don't care if the candidates are super strong -- you run a candidate from your own party if at all possible. You never improve morale, boost turnout, develop GOTV campaigns, or encourage people who might become Democrats by admitting that they don't matter enough to bother finding them someone to vote for. It's almost a form of disenfranchisement, in my opinion.

I think part of the problem is that the D’s always go to their rejects or has-beens to run things. The DPV is a complete joke. The guys over at RPV think dealing with them is like shooting fish in a barrel. Not THAT hard.
More fundamentally, however, is the D party has no ideas except (1) the GOP is mean, (2) the GOP “hates”, (3) tax more, (4) spend more, and (5) do whatever big labor tells them. On each count they are simply out of step with Virginia and until they try to get in step, the results you saw will, in the main, continue throughout the decade. In the meantime, have a nice Thanksgiving.

What was the median age of the Republican first-time candidates for state senate and house this 2011 cycle?

If you really believe what you've said in these comments, make a statement. Sign the petition (http://www.change.org/petitions/tell-dpva-central-committee-its-time-for-a-change) and say it directly to Moran and the CD Chairs.

Nepotism is not a strategy. Far too many people in DPVA have their positions because of who their big brother is or who they are married to.

What was the median margin of loss of the Republican first-time candidates for state senate and house this 2011 cycle?

Ghost of RWR quit pretending that you know what Democrats stand for. You don't. Speaking of which other than I'm not Obama, the GOP field stands for retrying all the failed strategies from the Bush Admin including foreign wars, deregulating key sectors, waging war on the unions, widening disparities between rich and poor, tax cuts for the rich, service cuts for the poor, preaching a balanced budget while refusing to raise revenues...
Talk about a party of no ideas....

You just can't shake having no ideas of your own other than sink or swim and screw the little guy. Thanks for proving my point!

Yep, can't shake that class warfare either I see!!! You libs are more predictable than gravity.

And Ghost immediately jumps to the "class warfare" meme.
It gets boring, just spouting bullet points.

Thanks Gretchen.... Ghost of RWR, wake me up when you have some actual original ideas to you know create jobs and perk up the economy.... you know what you GOPers claim you care about but never get around to doing....

In Brian's absence, who would you support for DPVA Chair?
Democratic and Republican members of Congress lsck original ideas to you know create jobs and perk up the economy.
I wrote the only comprehensive economic and fiscal plan Representative James Moran has submitted to the Congressional Budget Office for analysis in over 20 years.

Rust will be difficult to chisel out. He was mayor of Herndon for lots and lots of years. And he has name recognition that anyone running for office would envy.
