I've been looking into this since Donald McEachin was elected Democratic Caucus Chair last week, and it appears that Donald is now the highest ranking African American in the last 50 years in the Virginia Senate- perhaps the highest ranking ever.
Congratulations to Donald for making history- and to the Democratic Caucus for an excellent choice as Caucus Chair.
Who cares? Seriously. The senior pastor of my church is Black -- 4/5 of the congregants are White. My daughter's principal is Black -- 80% of the school is not. Our President is (partly) Black -- 88% of the country is not. The front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination is Black -- 95% of Republicans are not.
Really, no-one cares anymore.

One more thing. People make history by what they DO, not what they ARE.

Amen, Jack! AMEN!

McEachin DOES plenty -- which is perhaps why even the smallest praise rankles some?

Jack,
It matters because it is yet one more sign of how great America is. I'm not kidding. How many other democracies, especially outside of the US and Europe, would someone who is, himself, a minority, be allowed to lead a majority? So many countries political parties and politicians are based on race, or ethnicity, I think the fact that a black person CAN be elected to lead a majority-white country just says a lot about how great a country we are.

McEachin's career has been built on stabbing other Democrats in the back. Watch out Dick.

Manmohan Singh, the current Prime Minister of India is the first non-Hindu (he is a Sikh) to serve at that level. India is a democracy that is about as far as you can get from Europe and the US...

Hey, we have Virginia's own Eric Cantor, who is the first Jewish Majority Leader in the U.S. House of Representatives (though I can see how that might tick off some of you leftists).
Look, it's OK to celebrate Mr. McEachin's achivement and wish him well. However, let's remember what will be the modus operandi around here: If you disagree with Donald McEachin, you will be labeled a raaaaacist. However, if Donald McEachin dares to stray off of the NLS left-wing plantation, Ben will call him "beast" or some other culturally sensitive name.

Congratulations Don McEachin, one of the most unassuming, approachable, and pleasant politicians I've ever met. A leader.
African Americans suffered 400 years of god-awful treatment, and dehumanization at the hands of their fellow Virginians, yet they continued to have faith and to believe in the promise of America. Keeping their eye on the prize! It took one African American getting elected as President of the United States of America for those same persecutors to pick up the Gadsden or Rebel battle flag and start talking about insurrection. A contrast in character and faith for sure.
There is a steadfast faith in the democratic arc of history amongst the African American community. That example of quiet, non-violent faith and conviction inspires many, and is the aspiration of the Democratic Party.

Donald is a great legislator. Forget about how great of a black legislator he is. He's just a great man.
It will be nice when black Americans can accomplish things and not have their achievements belittled by small people who want to pigeon-hole them as "well, that's really good... for a black person."

Why would you claim in a county with a heavily Democratic seat that went uncontested that only strong GOP seats were left unopposed?
